Legal aid available in Arabic for refugees With the arrival and resettlement of Syrian refugee families in the region, Halton Community Legal Services (HCLS) says the demand for legal aid in Arabic will be increasing. That's why it has developed a one-page information sheet in Arabic about the recent release of its Legal Health Check-Up tool. The survey helps low-income people find unrecognized everyday legal problems and get legal assistance before a crisis can develop, according to the Georgetownbased HCLS. The Legal Health Check-Up, which is funded by Legal Aid Ontario, can also be taken in English or French online through www.legalhealthcheckup.ca. "For refugees who have fled countries where the rule of law has dissolved under conflict, gaining knowledge about the rights and protections they have under the laws of Canada sets a strong foundation on which to build their capacity as future citizens," Colleen Sym, HCLS executive director, said in a media release. "The efficacy of a democratic society with a fair and equitable justice system benefits when everyone is informed about their rights and obligations and how they can resolve legal problems," according to Sym. Contact for information If a Syrian refugee in Halton wants to do the Legal Health Check-Up in Arabic, the client or their community worker should contact Halton Community Legal Services. Clients can complete the checkup by phone with a HCLS caseworker with instant access to phone interpretation through MCIS Language Services, or make an appointment with an intake worker and interpreter from MCIS at the clinic. The Canadian federal government has contracted MCIS to be the official interpretation and translation service provider for those Syrian refugees arriving in Canada. Legal information resources in Arabic are also available for Syrian refugees and for front-line community workers through Community Legal Education Ontario in Toronto.
