J( K )1 SPORTS By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPO R T S EDITOR Ridge wins battle of undefeated teams Iroquois Ridge Wolf Pack saved their best for last in an entertaining 36-18 comeback win over Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils in Thursday's Halton senior boys division two Halton final at Ivor Wynne Stadium. The Wolf Pack trailed 18-15 at the end of the third quarter but then on the first play of the fourth quarter, quarter back Ben Nease hit Mark Peric with a long bomb touchdown reception. It was a real back breaker for O.T. with their defender getting a good hand on the ball, but the Ridge receiver scoop ing in the deflection. "We were ahead and then we had an unlucky bounce and then they took over from there," agreed O .T head coach Guy D'Alesio. They certainly did. Not only would the Ridge not relinquish that 21-18 lead, but they broke the game wide open over the next few minutes with two more touchdowns sandwiched around a onepoint safety. The final touchdown, really, was one for the ages -- a trick play that caught just about everyone in the stadium, including the O.T. defenders, off guard. Nease bounced the ball slightly back wards off the artificial turf to a receiver (Ian Mason) who then threw it to another completely wide open receiver in the end zone (Clark Thomas). "As long as it's backwards, it's still a live ball," explained Ridge coach Mike Luyks. "We worked on that hitch pass-pass, bouncing it all year long and it was ju st glorious to see it work." Ironically, he conceded, "it never worked in practice." O f course, they were never on a field as smooth as the turf at Ivor Wynne. Nease's numbers summed up the day for O.T. On one hand, they got to him, tagging him for three interceptions -- his first of the season. But on the other hand, he was also able to do what he did all season -- put up big numbers. While official stats were not available, coach Luyks guessed his final line was probably 12 for 16 for more than 300 yards. That mirrored his season's total in which he connected on 45 of 68 passes for 831 yards with no interceptions. The two teams managed to avoid each other in the regular season and, fit tingly, had both gone into the champi(See 'Ridge' page 14) Dundas St. W.
