The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Sunday November 18, 2001 - 1 5 Aquinas after both Jr. and Sr. hoops titles By Norm Nelson BEAVER S p a m 'S EDITOR The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders senior girls basketball team has apparently not missed a beat after losing four starters from last year's OFSAA silver medal winning team. After an undefeated regular and playoff season, they will seek to win their fourth straight Halton title this Monday, 4:45 p.m. at Sheridan College against Notre Dame who are similarly undefeat ed. The Aquinas streak does not include the strike year in which there was no girls basketball program at the school. Among the graduating starters from last year's superb Aquinas team which just failed to halt a third consecutive OFSAA gold medal by Hamilton St. Mary's were national team member Katie Donovan and provincial team member Alana Juzenas along with Kim Salem and Cailin Miziolek. Even last year, however, the team's future was in evidence with a couple of Grade 9 students playing huge roles. Kara Lang started and Karen Zmirak saw plenty of action. That puts them in the veteran status on this year's team, in their Grade 10 year when they could still be playing junior. And they're joined in the nucleus by two other Grade 10 students who could still be playing junior -- Sarah Dillon and Andrea Sergautis. What a team the Aquinas junior team would have with them in the fold! Not that the Aquinas juniors need the star quartet. They are doing quite fine without them, and are also in the Halton final on Monday, 3 p.m. against Nelson. "The thing that we're looking forward to," said Raiders senior basketball coach Mike Johnston, "is that we had an undefeated championship junior team last year. "This year, we have an undefeated junior team that's in the championship and our senior team is made up of four kids that start that could be playing junior. "So if you think about that junior team plus our four kids that are playing senior, that's a pretty tough team. "So that's basically what we're looking at two years down the road, is having all those really strong kids playing senior." The question is, can they make some noise right now. When pressed for an answer, coach Johnston pegs his team as probably top-15 in the province with only a couple of real tough tourney losses keeping them out of the top 10. The bottom line, though, is they might not be able to make a noise -- because of the strength of girls basketball in our local con ference (G-HAC) from Oakville through to Hamilton. Even with this area advancing two teams to OFSAA -- thanks to St. Mary's winning OFSAA, last year -- it will be tough. First, this year's playoff format is a bit different, and here's how it works. Aquinas and Halton have already advanced to the G-HAC `final four' along with the Hamilton Roman Catholic representatives St. Mary's and Bishop Ryan (they played their championship game on Friday night). The perk of winning their respective league playoff champi onship game, besides pride, is to host the crucial do-or-die G-HAC challenge against the loser of the other championship. Now ordinarily, it would also be a perk to avoid St. Mary's, being the three-time provincial champions and still top ranked. But coach Johnston said it might not be the case this season with Bishop Ryan also very strong, and sporting a win over St. Mary's this season. "The bottom line is ourselves and Notre Dame our going to have to play two very tough teams from Hamilton in order to qualify," said coach Johnston. He added that Aquinas, in tournament action, lost by eight points to Notre Dame and by an impressive five points to Bishop Ryan. of V o lu n t e e r s G> OAKVI LLE T h e O a k v il l e B e a v e r ° v J,, fa/e Sa£uU S e n io r S a tio rt ---------------- InternationalYear ofVolunteers 2001 Seniors Helping Seniors is a group of volunteers from Oakville' s two Seniors Centres, the Oakville Seniors' Center and the John Colbome Recreation Center for seniors that raise money for the Centres and for local seniors charities by working at community bingos. The group was formed in 1989 with a core group of volunteers and today there are over 25 active volunteers ranging in age from 50 to 86. In 2000 Seniors Helping Seniors raised over $15,000 and donated to the following organizations: S .E .N A C A Seniors Day Program, Connect Care, Fareshare Food Bank, Ian Anderson House, the Seniors Centres and many more. The impact of Seniors Helping Seniors donations to local seniors organizations has been great. The money has allowed these groups to increase their programs an services and it is the elderly clients who benefit. Working at a bingo is no easy job. The hours are late, the atmosphere is smokey and the customers can be very demanding. So why do di they do >it? Vem Quigley, President of Seniors Helping Seniors and a foundmember ofthe group answers the question: "The satisfaction is evident on the feces o f the volunteers wnen they donate the money they have worked so hard to raise.
