The Halton District School Board's (HDSB) 27th annual Halton Skills Competition will be held at Burlington's Robert Bateman High School, 5151 New St., on Tuesday, April 5, It takes place from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Students from across Halton Approximately 1,200 elementary and secondary students from all Halton public and Catholic boards will compete in more than 40 events. Teams of elementary students in Grades 4-8 will take part in activities like the technology challenge, green energy challenge, distance challenge, LEGO robotics and TV/video production competitions. New to this year's event is a demonstration of the learning students are experiencing as robotics are integrated into the curriculum. High school students will compete in events including: architectural CADD, auto collision repair, auto service technology, auto painting, baking, cabinetmaking, character animation, culinary arts, desktop publishing, digital photography, electrical installations, electronics, fashion design, floristry, graphic design, hairstyling, healthcare, home building, carpentry, horticulture, landscape design, mechanical computer-assisted design, precision machining, refrigeration, robotics, website development, welding and TV/Video production. Career showcase A career showcase takes place during the day with representatives from the community, business, industry and education sectors. "The Halton Skills Competition is a fabulous way to showcase the amazing talents of our students as they engage in friendly competition at a very high level," said Julie Hunt Gibbons, a superintendent of education with the Halton public school board. Huge need for skilled trades "There is a huge need for skilled trades in our country, and it is very encouraging to see both the interest and incredible skill levels acquired by our students," said Gibbons.
