Box Simbo author visits Oakville on Saturday An Oakville puppy who discovers a rare 19th Century Christmas music box hidden away in his owners' home provides the inspiration for this classic tale in the genre of The Nutcracker. Simbo Of Olde Oakville & The Antique Christmas Music Box is being launched in time for the holiday season. The book is about Simbo, a Shih Tzu puppy who, the week before Christmas, goes in search of an old pair of slip pers and instead discovers an Oakville family's heirloom which comes magically alive. The author, Plum Lind Johnson, who grew up in Oakville and was the founder and former publisher of Kids Toronto (now City Parent), says the book is based on a true story. Her parents, at the age of eighty, adopted Simbo as a puppy. The antique German music box -- also known as an "Automaton" -- has six porcelain dolls playing with toys in time to music, and has been in the family for over 120 years. Johnson wrote the book several years earlier for her mother's grandchildren. Recently, she added original watercolour illustrations of her parents' home -- where the action takes place -- and produced the small, giftboxed edition. It is available in Oakville at Second Edition Books, Gifted Hands, and the Erchless Museum gift shop; in Bronte at The Bear and I; and in Burlington at A Different Drummer Books. Johnson will be reading from the book at Pick O f The Crop Toys & Books on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 10:30 a.m. The rare antique music box will also be on view.
