That's because they are being held right in our backyard at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Jan. 8-12. The Oakville Skating Club members earned a gold medal in junior dance at this past w eekend's central Ontario championships in M ississauga and earned a bye right into the nationals. Dance seems to be a real strength for the local skating club, at this time, as no less than three other pairs also hit the podium in their respective sectional championships -- each earning silver. In their case, they advance to the east ern Canadian divisionals which will be held in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Dec. 6-9. The top skaters from this event advance to the junior nationals which well be held in St. John's, Newfoundland, Jan. 23-26 (the junior nationals were sep arated from the senior nationals last sea son). With the whole team stepping up and putting in a great effort, the Oakville Blades had a hot weekend beating Georgetown Raiders 7-5 on Saturday and Mississauga Chargers 4-3 on Friday in provincial Jr. A hockey action. Both teams were hot on the Blades heels, turning them into crucial "four-point games", noted Blades coach Jay Anderson. `Tonight's game (against Georgetown) put us back up to fourth place, and with games in hand, we're technically tied with Bramalea. "Right now we have as many wins in less than half of the season as we did last year." Oakville managed modest early comebacks in both games. In Saturday's 7-5 win in Georgetown, the Blades took control of the game by firing four straight goals to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. The Blades then had to withstand a furious Georgetown comeback which saw them climb back to 65 with 32 seconds left in the game. Mike Ruberto's empty netter then sealed the game. The Blades probably could have managed a bigger winning margin, had they not spent as much time as they did in the penalty box, mainly in the second period. Although their penalty killing was good. `There were good sections of the game tonight, but it wasn't a complete game," said coach Anderson. "We were killing penalties a lot in the second period." In Friday night's 4-3 win over visiting Mississauga, the Blades took control of the game with three straight goals to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Mississauga then kept the fans glued to their seats with a late goal. A shake up of lines in this game sparked some offence from an unlikely source. Kevin Harvey, who was playing with Rob Tarantino and Evan McGrath, scored two of the Blades four goals, showing another side to his usual role of opposition pest. Harvey, who has been playing really well lately, especially for the past four or five games, also had an assist to double, in one night, his point total for the season. "It's about time for a change," said Harvey after the game. "That was my first goal of the year. I'm struggling to hit the net and finish. I've got two new linemates who are great playmakers. I also stayed out of the penalty box for once." BLADES BITS Adam Dennis is the alternate goalie for Ontario's U17 team, behind Jeff MacDougald (Owen Sound Greys Junior B) and David Brown (Hamilton Kilty Bees Junior A). "This decision was down to the wire as he was given consideration right up to the midnight deadline," remarked Blades coach Jay Anderson on the OHA's web interactive chadine. "If you have seen this kid play, you would know that he is one of the main reasons that the Oakville Blades are in the thick of it all."
