As if last year's stunning new Sonata wasn't convincing enough, this latest entry-level Accent will stop even the most placid new-car shoppers dead in their tracks. Dimensionally, the new Accent varies only slightly from the first-generation car introduced in 1995. Wheelbase has grown by about four centimetres, overall length is up by about 11 cm (about 10 cm for the hatchback) and there is a five-cm gain in width. But the real clincher for the Accent is its seductive new sheetmetal envelope. Whether it's the three-door hatchback, or four-door sedan, the Accent's new styling is arguably the most attractive of any of the existing basic transportation mod ules. Gone are the original car's rounded features, replaced by angles and edges that give it a richer, more refined appearance. Overall, the look is that of a junior version of its big-brother Sonata, not a bad thing for a car in this class. What can't be seen is the work Hyundai has put into making the car quieter and more rigid with less vibration. This includes strengthening the door and roof pillars, adding foam and other sound-deadening materials to the floor panel, and employing hydraulic mounts for the engine and double seals for the doors. The Accent's cabin area has also been completely upgraded, with larger seats that use higherdensity foam and higher-quality fabrics. Both three- and four-door models offer a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The dash and steering wheel are also new for 2000. Under the hood, Hyundai has taken the why-mess-with-success approach with the Accent. The 1.5-litre SOHC four-cylinder engine is essentially the same as last year, with only mild improve ments to the block, cylinder head and crankshaft. Output, however, remains SPEC SHEET 2000 Hyundai Accent * Three-door coupe or four-door sedan available in base GS, GSi or GL mod els. * 1.5-litre SOHC four-cylinder engine produces 92 horsepower. * Five-speed manual, or optional fourspeed automatic transmission + Eye-catching new looks. * Increased interior room. * Proven powertrain with new-for-2000 improvements. * Above-average list of standard fea tures. * Base Price: $12,000 unchanged from last year at 92 horsepower and 97 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Transmission choices consist of a five-speed manual or option al four-speed automatic. Considering the Accent's sta tus as a car at the extreme end of the affordability scale, you'll still find lots to smile about as you scour the list of built-in features. Every one these little jewels comes with dual remote outside mirrors, tinted glass, floor con sole, remote fuel lid release, wheel covers and driver's side height-adjustable seat, to name a few. Available options such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, remote trunk release, rear spoiler, alloy wheels and sunroof can also be specified either individually or as part of a group. For very little cash outlay, the Accent offers league-leading value in a sub-compact with sub stance. You could easily spend $2,000 to $3,000 more for any other entry-level effort, or the same amount for a pre-owned small car. But when you take into con sideration the Accent's attributes of pep, content and price -- not to mention its knockout design -- it's a small-car choice that's near ly impossible to overlook. 1930 B usin ess / PROI'ESSIOMI W elco m e Welcoming new business, professionals and executives to the Oakville business community.
