The forward line of Tyler Karius, Bryce MacRae and Daniel Purcell combined for 11 points to lead the Rangers to a 5-2 win. Welland opened the scoring, putting a rebound past Joey Lepera after Lepera had shot out his right leg to make a nice pad save on the initial shot, but some nice work by Karius resulted in MacRae potting a rebound of his own, and the teams were even after one. Oakville took the lead in the second when Bradley Morris hit Scott Henry in full stride at centre ice and Henry's rocket beat the Tiger keeper low to the glove' side. Lepera made a huge glove save with three min utes left in the second to keep the Rangers ahead, then MacRae scored his second of the night on a seeing-eye shot from the high slot, to make the score 3-1, and the Rangers never looked back. The fourth Oakville goal came in the third when Matthew Prapavessis fired a low shot from the point, and Purcell was on the door-step to tip in the rebound. Some hectic play in the Ranger end resulted in another goal for the visitors, but Oakville continued to dictate the play and Karius, with an empty-netter, closed out the scoring. Scoring for the Rangers were Bryce MacRae (2), Scott Henry, Daniel Purcell and Tyler Karius. Assists went to Karius (3), Purcell (3), MacRae, Bradley Morris and Matt Prapavessis. The Rangers took part in the Oakville tournament last week and despite battling hard, lost all three roundrobin games by an identical 3-2 score and failed to advance to the semi-finals. Oakville's opening game vs. Stoney Creek saw the Rangers give up a goal 17 seconds in and another, while two men short, to trail 2-0 after one. The Rangers fell behind 3-0 in the second before Tyler Karius got them on the board, picking up a loose puck in the slot and burying it. Bryce MacRae closed the gap to one early in the third, firing a rebound into the back of the net, but that would be the end of the scoring. Assisting on Oakville's goals were Joel Selinger (2), Reid Stevens and Bradley Morris. Next up for the Rangers was the Guelph Storm and again they were down 2-0 after the first period. Michael DeRenzis scored the Rangers' first goal, somehow managing to get the shot away with two Storm defenders draped all over him. Oakville gave up the eventual winner, short-handed late in the second and Derenzis tallied again in the third to get the Rangers close. Despite generating all kinds of pressure with the goalie pulled on a power-play near the end, the Rangers could not come up with the equalizer. Picking up assists on DeRenzis' goals were Joel Selinger (2), Brad Morris, and Elliott Cowbum. Oakville's final opponent was The Toronto Aces and the Rangers found themselves down 2-0 having given up goals in the first minute of both the first and third periods. Oakville out-played their Toronto counterparts throughout, but ran into a hot goaltender and were not fully rewarded for their efforts. Mike DeRenzis did beat the Aces' goalie, who had lost his stick in a goal mouth scramble, but Toronto replied less than a minute later to restore the two-goal lead. Elliott Cowbum picked up Oakville's second goal, intercepting a clearing attempt outside the Toronto blue-line and walking around the defenceman before firing a bad-angle shot that eluded the keeper. Michael Mirabelli and Matt McKeown drew assists on DeRenzis' goal. The Rangers also participated in the 3 on 3 compe tition, where they advanced to the final before losing to the Guelph team. Oakville tourney winners in 20T The Oakville Rangers minor bantam AA team carried their strong league play into last week's Oakville International Hockey Tournament, winning the championship in an exciting final game that saw them come from a four goal deficit to win in double overtime. Round Robin: In the first game against Goulding Park Rangers, Oakville notched a 6-3 victory with Taylor Jenkin leading the scoring with five goals including a natural hat trick. Griffin Allan chipped in the other marker with assists going to Luke Tresham, Tyler Legein, Nick Randall, Brock Pawliw, Steven Mills, Brandon Taverner, Ryan Andrews and Cam McKay. In game two, Oakville lost a close one 3-2 to Etobicoke Canucks with Etobicoke scoring the win ning goal with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Bryan Whitney and Taverner scored for the Rangers with assists going to Ryan Donnelly, Grant Jackman, Legein and Pawliw. In game three, the Rangers needed to win big in order to advance to the semifinal and delivered by defeating the Scarborough Stallions 5-0. Brock Pawliw recorded the hat trick with Tresham and Legein rounding out the scoring. Assists went to Dan Warelis, Cam Foley, Donnelly, Legein, Jenkin, Jackman, Whitney, Warelis and Taverner. Solid, shutout goaltending by Cam Crawford preserved the margin of victory and allowed the Rangers to advance. Semifinal: The semifinal game saw a rematch with the Etobicoke Canucks and the tough, physical game resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Rangers. Pawliw scored twice including the winner with less than 5 minutes left in the game. Cam McKay also scored on a pretty, unassisted effort. Tresham, Legein and Jenkin earned assists. Kyle Anderson played solid between the pipes rounding out a complete team effort. Championship Game: Matched against the strong London Jr. Knights, the Rangers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Brandon Taverner. The Rangers then got into penalty trouble allowing London to gather momentum and score five unan swered goals early into the second period. However, the coaching staff of Paul Foley, Mark Pawliw, Jeff Andrews and Gary O'Donnell kept the team focused and the tenacious Rangers slowly chipped away at the London lead until Brock Pawliw tied it up with three minutes to go in regulation time. The game wasn't decided until the second over time period when `Rocketman' Cam McKay drilled a high, hard slapshot from the point after a pretty set-up from Taverner. Other goals went to Legein, Allan and Warelis. Ontario Cup champions stunned at the Dome Oakville's U-13AA Boys Indoor soccer team, the Warriors, stunned 1999 Ontario Cup and Central Soccer League Outdoor Champions, Kleinburg Lions, 4-2, in a thrilling game at the Oakville Dome on Dec. 18th. The Warriors, newly-promoted to the tough Regional Indoor League, never allowed Kleinburg to settle and took an early lead through a clever header from Vince D'Andrea. Kleinburg managed to equal ize soon after but their joy was short-fived as Matthew Sankar scored a good goal to put the Warriors ahead again. Connor Orchard-Young drew a twominute penalty just on half-time when his desper ate tackle from behind brought a Kleinburg break away forward crashing to the turf, saving a cer tain goal. The Warriors survived Kleinburg's ensu ing onslaught early in the sec ond period with a spirited perfor mance at the back from Mark Jansen and outstanding goalkeeping by Nils Binstock. Kleinburg's efforts to regain momentum forced them to push play ers into attack leaving them vul nerable at the back. Oakville's con tinued determined tackling and pene trating forward play led to two further goals by Randy Pusey and Paul Ferri, giving the Warriors a commanding 4-1 lead with 10 min utes to play. Although Oakville came close to scoring again late in the game through efforts by Charles Crompton, Paul Ferri and Vince D'Andrea, it was Kleinburg's frus trated forwards who finally man aged to find the net for the final goal of the game.
