Oakvillegreen helps with spring planting choices With planting season around the corner, Oakvillegreen Conservation Association is encouraging people to help increase the pollinator habitat and Oakville's urban forest. The local group is selling pollinator garden kits and native trees and shrubs on its website, www.oakvillegreen.org, until April 24. People can take action on climate change, urban forest losses due to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), and even help ailing pollinator and monarch butterfly populations, by planting native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, stated the non-profit organization in a press release. "Adding native trees, shrubs and flowers, may seem like a small action, but when multiplied by each yard, balcony or schoolyard, it will have a dramatic effect for pollinator habitat and for urban biodiversity," stated Karen Brock, Oakvillegreen president. The spring plant sale includes 18 species of locally native trees and shrubs, butterfly milkweed (a popular orange-flowered milkweed important for monarch caterpillars) and pollinator garden kits that are ecologically approved and will thrive in Halton clay. Oakvillegreen Executive Director Giuliana Casimirri said native plants are hard to find, and determining what is actually native to Halton and suited to an urban garden can be a challenge, even for an avid gardener. "We've taken the guesswork and effort out of selecting and sourcing native plants," she said. Purchased plants will be ready for pickup at Oakville Municipal Greenhouse on Cornwall Road May 7 from 9 a.m. to noon. Oakvillegreen is also offering fruit trees, berry shrubs and other edibles that can be picked up in Oakville at the same time. Visit at www.transitiontreemobile.org/woocommerce/shop. For more information, visit www. oakvillegreen.org or email programs@ oakvillegreen.org. Oakvillegreen also offers hands-on workshops and educational presentations on urban forests, pollinators and other environmental and sustainability topics. 19 | Thursday, March 31, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com n g i s a s it' As a Maid Right owner you have my quality guarantee with every clean. The birds are chirping, the trees are beginning to bud and we all cringe at the mention of the four letter word also known as "snow". It's also the time of year where a very contagious condition is going around, commonly known as Spring Fever! Symptoms may include refusing to wear a winter jacket, an excessively cheery attitude, and best of all - the unrelenting need to clean and de-clutter every area of your home. See that piece of furniture collecting dust in the corner? The old appliance in the garage that's still in working condition? How about the leftover building materials you never took out of the box but can't return to the store? Isn't it about time you freed up some space? Don't worry, Habitat Halton-Mississauga is here to help you take control of your clutter this spring! The ReStores, a social enterprise run by Habitat for Humanity and their team of volunteers, are the perfect place to donate your unused or unwanted items while also contributing to a worthwhile cause. Every year, the stores divert thousands of tonnes of product from landfills and helps to raise money to help build affordable homes for local families in need of a safe place to live. Donating to Habitat is quick and easy. Items such as cabinetry, unused building supplies and flooring, furniture, appliances, home decor, tools, lighting and more can be dropped off at any of the three locations in Burlington, Milton or Mississauga OR you can fill out the form at habitathm.ca or call 905-637-4446 ext.427 and arrange for Habitat to pickup the items from your home (as long as they are easily accessible in a garage or on your driveway to ensure the safety of our volunteers). In exchange for your donation, you could be eligible to receive a charitable tax receipt for the sale value of the item if it's over $100. What are you waiting for? Get a jump start on your spring cleaning this weekend by donating to Habitat.
