As part of this commitment, we want to make the region a more sustainable place to live and help residents with their waste diversion efforts. We can all do this by practicing the 3R's ­ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This spring, Halton will once again offer compost to residents free of charge and help them dispose of electronic and household hazardous waste during our spring waste events. Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr Compost Giveaway Visit the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) between May 9 and May 15 to take home your share of compost during our Spring Compost Giveaway event. Building a better Halton this construction season Regional Council is committed to delivering highquality infrastructure today so we have a stronger Halton tomorrow. As part of our approach to community planning, the Region is preparing to deliver several key improvements to our road, water and wastewater systems this year. The Region will invest $3.7 billion over the next 10 years, and this year alone we will be investing over $274 million to support growth in our region and ensure we can meet the needs of our communities. Construction work will soon resume throughout Halton to help maintain our existing infrastructure in a state of good repair while implementing the Region's many planned enhancements. For example, several road-widening projects will assist with the traffic flow on major arteries, including the widening of Steeles Avenue east of Fifth Line South to west of Trafalgar Road in Halton Hills. Additionally, many water and wastewater projects including the expansion of the Washburn water reservoir in Burlington will address capacity and make routine maintenance easier. These projects and many more demonstrate how our investments in a stronger Halton help foster healthy, complete communities. Special Waste Drop-off Days On Saturday, April 30, residents are invited to bring their household hazardous waste and electronics to the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre in Georgetown between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for safe disposal. No commercial waste will be accepted. For more information, visit halton.ca/dropoff. HWMS Sunday Openings The Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) will be open on Sundays from April 17 to July 10, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This pilot program will measure resident interest and assess the long-term feasibility of having the landfill open on Sundays. Halton Older Adults' Directory 2016-2017 now available The 2016-2017 edition of Halton's Older Adults' Directory connects our residents to excellent resources including: · a comprehensive listing of contact information; · an extensive range of services available to older adults in Halton; and · several websites that offer detailed information online. The directory is compiled by Halton's Older Adult Advisory Committee. It is a key resource that has provided valuable information to older adults (65+), caregivers and service providers since 1988.
