T hat quandary is the driving force behind B urloak T h e atre G roup's (BTG ) production o f The M atchm aker playing at the O akville Centre for Perform ing A rts until Saturday DINNER @ 6:00 P.M. PERFORMANCE @ 8:00 P.M. THEi C A L L 905-815-2021 C entre FO R T IC K E T S & R ES E R V A T IO N S Theatre Review (Jan. 29th). T his w arm , rollicking com edy set in the 1890s not only keeps the audience laughing, chuckling and guffaw ing, even the w ell-tim ed silences extract little tw itters o f antici pation. "W h at's next?" the audience w onders before being w hisked in another direction. P layw right T hornton W ilder, w ho later w rote the classic, O ur Town , keeps them guessing in this furiously paced, physical farce that later inspired the Broadw ay hit and film , H ello D olly! Somehow, in betw een the racing around, tim ely falls and various hide-and-seek antics, W ilder m akes tim e to pause and reflect on the hum an condition through four w ell-tim ed m onologues - quite a feat considering the high energy, attention-grabbing characters he has created. A dventure is the key w ord in The M atchm aker. The characters each long for adventure in their ow n way. For H orace Vandergelder, Y onkers' m ost prom inent m erchant, the desire to rem arry and the pursuit o f a new bride at age 60 is his adventure. Veteran, aw ard-w inning acto r V ince C arlin captures V andergelder's arrogant, outrageously obnoxious attitudes perfectly. T he audience can 't help but react w hen he spews forth his opinion on the difference betw een a w ife and a housekeeper. H is concerns for his niece, E rm engarde's im pending m arriage to her "useless" fiance, A m brose K em per, softens his hard im age ju s t en o u g h to m ake him likable - w ell, m aybe. F or D olly Levi, the m atchm aker w ho sets her sights on the w ealthy V andergelder in the m idst o f fixing him up with quirky M anhattan m illiner, Irene M olloy, the chase is her adventure. H ow to get this rich, w indbag interested without becom ing suspicious? H m m ...su c h an interesting chal lenge. K itty Varley's portrayal o f D olly L evi is enchanting, despite standing in the shadow o f B arb ra S treisan d 's largerthan-life perform ance o f the sam e flam boyant character in the 1969 film version, H ello D olly! M em bers o f the O akville audience are also draw n to V arley's bossy, inquisitive, schem ing personality w hile her lovely voice, fiery red hair, red silk flounces and twirling parasol com m and their attention. W h en sh e 's on stage, you ju s t know som ething will happen. "M oney is like m anure," she deduces. "You have to spread it around." For V andergelder's tw o beleaguered clerks, Cornelius H ackl and Barnaby Tucker, the search for adventure leads them to a hilarious series o f unforeseen events. Longtim e BTG actor, P eter K oehnen plays Cornelius w ith ju s t the right touch o f frustration and gleeful inno cence - the innocence o f a m an w ho h asn 't y et lived, hav ing slaved under V andergelder's bellow ing w ays for 10 long years. Prom oted to ch ief clerk for the second tim e, a disgrun tled Cornelius, 33, rebels from the confines o f the Yonkers' office and talks his reluctant you n g protege, Barnaby, 17, into jo in in g him on a ja u n t to M anhattan. "W e're not com ing back until w e kiss a girl!" declares C ornelius to a shocked, Barnaby. "B ut C o rn eliu s...," the g rounded B arnaby warns his new ly reckless friend over and over. Iroquois Ridge High School student, Jason Paquette, 18, in his first com m unity theatre perform ance, plays the overw helm ed Barnaby with ju st the right am ount o f naivete and restraint, delivering W ild er's final w isdom succinctly in the end. A nd then th ere's M alachi Stack, an aging, drunken apprentice played by the scene-stealing G eo ff Taylor. "T h ere's a w om an over there w hom civilization hasn't touched," he dryly w arns his em ployer, Vandergelder, as the farce unfolds w ith hilarious results at T he H arm onica G ar dens R estaurant on the Battery. The w orld is full o f w onderful things as the characters in The M atchm aker each discover in their ow n way. D irector K evin H axell has done a fine jo b finding order in the chaos and pulling together a talented, large cast o f 19 in this farce, w hich he prefers to call a "character-driven com edy." C haracters, indeed, abound in The M atchm aker, and th ey 're not easily forgotten. P erform ances continue at the O akville C entre nightly until Jan. 29th.
