Ritter earned a berth by virtue o f a third place finish in the ju n io r m en's freeskate at the 2000 Bank o f M ontreal E astern D ivisional Cham pionships held last m onth in Laval, Q uebec. In ju n io r d an ce, the O akville Skating Club is represented by two duos, w ho are retu rn in g to the national cham pionships. L ast year, they were entered in the novice division and O akville's Ju lie M acD o n ald and her N ew m arket dance partner M ichael Faw cett collected a national silver m edal w hile O ak v ille's D ebbie All worth and her Scarborough dance partner Jon Lane finished sixth. T his season, they m oved up to the ju n io r category, and finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, at the eastern divisionals w hich is ju st one step below the nationals. N ot quite high enough to directly qualify for the nationals (top four earned direct berths), they had to anxiously w ait before being added to the field by the CFSA. H ardabura w rote him self into the rec o rd boo k s o f the p o w erh o u se N ebraska gym nastics squad, capping his sensational season w ith not one but tw o N C A A titles, the all round and the floor exercise. As he starts only his ju n io r (third) year at the school, he has already becom e one o f the m ost accom plished g y m n a sts in school history. A nd N ebraska is a pow erhouse w ith eight N C A A national team cham pionships to its credit, one short o f the record nine shared by Penn State and Illinois. N ebraska, how ever, until last y e a r's bronze m edal, had been shut out o f the N C A A cham pionships since its last national title in 1994. T his year th ey 're aim ing to change the colour to gold from bronze, and th ere's no doubt that H ardabura will be a key peg. "I think that we are going to be one o f the team s -- if not the team -- to beat in the country this season," said N ebraska head coach Francis Allen. "In H ardabura, w e've got the guy that everyone w ants to beat, and w e've got a very experienced group that know s how to w in." T hat group, w hich is ranked third in the country behind N C A A cham pi on M ich ig an and ru n n er-u p O hio State, also includes another national N C A A cham pion. S enior M arshall N elson (Greeley, Colo.), who missed last season w hile rehabilitating from knee surgery, won the 1998 and 1997 N C A A parallel bars title and was the 1997 N C A A horizontal bar cham pion. T heir quest for a cham pionship sea son kicked off on the right foot last w eekend as they won their opening meet, the Rocky M ountain O pen in C olorado Springs, w ith a 222.975 score. T h at bettered second place O klahom a (ranked fourth in the U.S.) w ho cam e in at 222.875.
