It goes w ith the sport, he said, "like a runner gets shin splints." T h e nagging injury ju st got w orse as his fall training pro gressed. "It ju st started hurting a bit, so instead o f getting back for this w eekend, it's m ore im por tant to be back for M arch and April w hen the N CA A 's are." A t the end o f the season, he said h e'll have surgery. "Up to then I'm ju st going to get cortisone shots throughout the season and hopefully help out the team at the end." T he injury hasn't altered his g o al " to rep eat as natio n al cham pion and to be a part o f the n atio n al ch a m p io n sh ip team ." A nd th at's w hy h e's taking no chances. "If I w ere to com e back now, I m ay be hurting by M arch, and th a t's w hat the w hole season is about, the last m eet (the N C A A cham pionships), so I w ant to build m yself back up so I can take a full run at it." H e's no stranger to injury. Before last y ea r's sensational season, he w as fortun ate to co m p letely rec o v er from a potentially career ending acci dent in w hich his thum b had to be reattached. It w as injured in a freak accident suffered w hile attem p tin g to rep air a law n m ow er w ith a faulty switch. Injury, he said, " is part o f the gam e." "I t's an o th er thing I ju st have to be sm art about. You can't go out there and try to win your first couple o f m eets and be done for the rest o f the sea son." He ju st resum ed practising again ea rlie r this m onth. "I started off doing sm aller things and I'm ju st going to try to bu ild up the little m uscles around i t ... It's not going to get any better and it will get worse if I w ork w ith it too much. W hat I need to do is ju st to take it slow. "I'll be back at full strength in a m onth." H ardabura has no regrets at forgoing his long national team career to jo in the H uskers in N C A A com petition. "I'm done w ith them (the C anadian national team )," he told the B eaver bluntly, "To me, the program 's not going anyw here fast and I d o n 't w ant to w aste my tim e b ack there any m ore. I'm having a good tim e at school, here." A t N eb rask a, h e 's able to have his cake and eat it too, so to speak. `T h e difference is you d o n 't have to sacrifice school to do a sport. It's all in the same spot. "I alw ays thought to be a good gym nast, you need other parts o f your life ... you need all the spokes in the wheel. "And here you have it. You have school, you have a social life, you have gym nastics, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. "The day I d o n 't enjoy the sport is the day I quit. "T h at's w hat started happen ing in Canada (w ith the nation al team ), I alm ost quit. A nd then I thought I'm going to go dow n and give college a try, and I'm loving it again." And no wonder, with two NCA A titles to defend. Still, he paid the price to achieve a dream he w anted but d id n 't necessarily expect. "I worked my (butt) o ff all year for it, and the hard work paid off, for sure." And when he com es back from injury -- perhaps as early as this w eekend when N ebraska ho sts N avy on S aturday -- h e'll be the man. "Ja so n 's the defending n ational cham pion, and we expect nothing less o f him this year," said coach Allen. "H e's the guy to beat in the nation."
