(To date, the T ow n's $1.2 m illion contribution to the YM CA com es closest.) The C C IT education program will be unique to North A m erica by com bining arts, science and digital m edia to produce "jo b ready" graduates. Students will earn a com bined university/college com m unications degree over four years. (Currently this could take up to seven years.) C C IT will accom m odate 300 students per year at facili ties to be built at the U niversity o f Toronto at M ississauga (UTM ) and Sheridan C ollege in Oakville. The local site will cover approxim ately 70,000 sq.ft. The $24.7 m illion U TM com puter com m unications facility will be about 100,000 square feet. A ccording to the H enderson/C ash report, lack o f support on O akville's part could reduce Sheridan chances with the province. W ith M ississauga already confirm ed, there is a risk that the w hole C C IT facility could be located at UTM w ithout O akville's support. W ith approxim ately 5,000 sq. ft. o f space in CC IT allo cated for the start-up o f new digital m edia businesses, the Town sees this as a "high tech incubator" for new enterpris es that could becom e part o f the community. A fter m eeting w ith the college, Town staff are also ask ing that som e preference be given to area students for adm is sion to C C IT and that priority be given to O akville-based firms for w ork term placem ents. "Sheridan College is one o f O akville's significant com m unity assets and has dem onstrated its com m itm ent to m aintaining is leading edge status through the new proposed C C IT degree program w ith the University o f Toronto at M ississauga," said the report. T hat said, Flynn still w ants som e questions answered: w hat are the budgetary im pact on the capital forecast and the m illrate; will any projects will be delayed by donating the $1 m illion; w hat are the "tangible" benefits to the Town of CCIT; are there further options to helping Sheridan. These answ ers are necessary, said Flynn, in order to "go ahead with confidence." Som e councillors also see such financial involvem ent as another form o f dow nloading onto the tax bill. In addition, Ward 3's Keith Bird w ould like to know how m any other local institutions w ill be com ing to Council, cap in hand, looking for funding. "I w ant an idea how long the list is going to be," he said. W ard 6 councillor Tedd Sm ith - w ho equated the money with the abortive federal bailout o f C anadian N H L teams pushed his peers to sim ply m ake up their m ind. The fact that the contribution precedent-setting is a given, he said. "If we d o n 't w ant this, let's ju s t say so," he said. Ward 5 councillor Liz B ehrens agreed to the deferral to next w eek but gave notice that she will be voting against the contribution com e M onday. W ard 5 's Stephen Sparling told Council to stop whining about the province and m ake a decision based solely on the merits o f the project.
