Halton Region students shone at an annual science and engineering fair in Hamilton, collecting numerous awards, with a select few earning trips to upcoming international and national competitions. Dozens of elementary and high school students from Halton were recognized with various honours at the 56th annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) awards ceremony held at Mohawk College on Tuesday. It is an assistive technology device with "augmentative and alternative communication capabilities for individuals with severe physical impairments and communication deficiencies to effectively communicate and control their environment." White Oaks Secondary Emma Mogus of Oakville's White Oaks Secondary School, entered in her first science fair, placed second overall in the Bestin-Fair Award category for her project TiC -- Tongue Interface Communication Assistive Technology for Severe Impairments. It took Mogus two years to develop her invention. She is a volunteer researcher at McMaster University in the Department of Engineering Physics. Mogus' project relates to what she describes as the design and development of a low-cost, non-invasive, tongue- St. Bernadette The BASEF Chairman's Award was won by Mark McCready and Fadi Graise of St. Bernadette for their project titled Does The Distance Between Dominoes Effect The Speed That They Fall? Halton elementary and high school students also accounted for several industry-sponsored awards, as well as 14 Gold Merit, 41 Silver Merit and 64 Bronze Merit awards. Sixteen students with top projects in Hamilton advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair to be held in Montreal on May 14-21. Nine of the 16 BASEF projects going to nationals are by Halton students. Four Burlington students qualified for nationals: Katie Brent of Notre Dame S.S., Caroline Mahut of M.M. Robinson H.S., Michael Wolfe of Trinity Christian School and Dylex Suan of St. Christopher elementary.
