Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) is hosting an environmental fair at Glen Abbey Community Centre, 1415 Third Line, featuring more than 35 educational booths. Organizers say it aims to create awareness about the importance of the natural environment while encouraging residents to become more environmentally sustainable. "The Halton Eco Festival is one of Ontario's longest-running environmental fairs and it has succeeded by promoting healthy living, biodiversity and the belief in a sustainable future," stated show manager and OCCPEHR executive director Stephen Dankowich. In its 16th year, the fair is sponsored by Conservation Halton, Halton Region Public Works, the Town of Oakville's Environmental Policy Department, Halton Green Screens and Niagara Escarpment Views. The Halton Eco Festival is one of Ontario's longest-runnng environmental fairs and it has succeeded by promoting healthy living, biodiversity and the belief in a sustainable future. Stephen Dankowich executive director Oakville Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights Halton Green Screens will present short environmental films and documentaries to inspire environmental stewardship. Films include This Land is Our Land, The Magic School Bus and others regarding environmental solutions, electronics, cap and trade, cosmetics, and bottled water. After each screening, there will be activities, including starting seedlings and making personal care products. Other event highlights include: · a yoga demonstration from 12:30-1:30 p.m. by Sahaja Yoga Meditation, which has partnered with the UNESCO Centre for Peace · a classical wooden flute musical recital by Andrew Tyas, a Toronto high school teacher · local eco campaigns highlighted in a series of half-hour workshops from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Speakers Corner area. Five educational speakers will address how to achieve a sustainable future. Speakers include Liz Benneian of the Trumpeter Swan Restoration Group at 1:30 p.m.; Mervyn Russell of the Oakville Climate Change Group at 2 p.m.; Rita Vogel Post of RAIL Milton talking about intermodal train and truck traffic at 2:30 p.m.; Roberta McGregor of Recycling Revisited raising awareness of the citizen recycling movement at 3 p.m.; and, Trisha Henderson of the Town of Oakville's Environmental Policy Department on adapting to climate change at 3:30 p.m. · a Kids Eco Fun Zone for children · Sciensational Sssnakes!! show, which provides hands-on education about reptiles and amphibians. Learn about their ecology and conservation issues while enjoying the opportunity to interact, touch and hold the animals. · creating seed bombs using seeds of native species of flowers and grasses rolled into a clay ball at the Oakvillegreen booth · Eco Jeopardy, an inventive re-creation of the popular TV show. Participants are challenged to test their knowledge of environmental issues and Halton region. Halton Region Public Works will also be distributing four hundred free blue boxes to visitors, with a limit of one per family. In addition, hundreds of orange boxes will also be given out to families to collect household hazardous waste. The festival also features an Eco Cafe, door prizes and more. Attendees are encouraged to carpool to the community centre with family, friends and neighbours or take bus #3 from the Bronte GO Station at Third Line, just south of the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) or bus #28 from the Oakville GO Station near Trafalgar Road.
