Yoga rejuvenates body and soul B y M a r y C o lle tt SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Ten years ago, yoga changed the life of Oakville resident Neera Arora. When told by her doctor that an operation required to repair some dam aged knee cartilage was not guaran teed to be 100% effective, Arora turned to yoga as an alternative reme dy. Arora had always led a "healthy life" which included the practice of yoga, but she now pursued it with renewed fervour, and after just six weeks, she was "hooked." After a lengthy process, she has recently opened her own yoga studio, called Healthy Secrets , located in her home near Sixth Line and Dundas Street. Today, the 51-year-old mother of three moves with graceful agility and easily assumes the lotus position on her living-room couch, before launch ing into an animated discussion on her latest passion and profession. "Prior to beginning yoga, I wasn't able to touch my toes; since then, I have gained an incredible amount of flexibility and strength." Inspired by the positive effects of her personal yoga regime, Arora enrolled in the Yoga Teacher's Training Program at Sheridan College in Oakville. Now, she is both a dedicated yoga participant and a qualified instructor. Arora believes that "the best thing about yoga is that it is for everyone anyone from ages 12 to 80 can take it." For that reason, Arora offers spe cialized yoga classes for children and adolescents, as well as young and older adults alike. Classes are currently held on Thursday evenings, and Friday morn ings and evenings, but there are plans to expand to Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, due to increasing popular ity. The cost for each session is $10, or $75 for an eight-week session with a free introductory course for newcom ers. Class sizes are kept small - no more than eight people - to ensure that personal attention is given. Along with its relaxation benefits, yoga can be part of a weight loss pro gram, and also aid in various healthrelated ailments. Arora describes yoga as "an effec tive, non-invasive activity that works with your body to create a better you." Other Oakville program co-ordinators agree with Arora on yoga's broadbased appeal. Nina Scott, who has headed the Spirit o f Movement program at Maple Grove United Church for the past 10 years, offers a selection of classes from beginners to advanced. She says, "different people take different classes Photo by Peter C. McCusker Peggy Budd (from left), Neera Arora and Carol Smith `mouth exhale' in the `lion's pose,' "which opens up the throat and jaw, and stretches the neck muscles," says Arora. "It stretches the facial muscles and prevents*wrinkles." for different things, but I'm definitely seeing a wider assortment of clients, including teenagers and men." Sharon Bateman, co-ordinator of the Yoga Instructor's Program at Sheridan College, has noted the same diversity in her classes. She admits that while the program is still com prised mostly o f females. `T hey range in age from 20 to 70 years old, and come from a wide variety of back grounds and fitness levels." Jessie Sail provides classes in both yoga and meditation at her homebased studio, Wheels o f Life, at her home near Third Line and Upper Middle Road. Yoga classes are held Mondays from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Meditation classes are offered on Monday evenings, 7:30 to 9 p.m., and private classes are available by appointment. Sail also teaches Reiki, or Healing Touch Therapy on week ends. Yoga classes are also available through Oakville Parks and Recreation and YMCA, as well as at the Oakville Seniors' Recreation Centre and the Sir John Colbome Recreation Centre for Seniors.
