Tourney triumph in Buffalo The surging Oakville Rangers minor bantam AA rep team heads into the OMHA playdowns this week with lots of momentum. After winning the Oakville International Hockey Tournament in late December in dramatic fashion, the Rangers followed that up by clinching first place and the Bowen Tri-County Division league championship on the last game of the regular sea son, defeating the Caledon Hawks 6-3. The Rangers went 11-2 in their last 13 games to catch and pass Caledon for the pennant. BUFFALO TOURNEY Their winning ways continued when they headed to Buffalo on January 21 for the Greater Buffalo Hockey Tournament. Once again the Rangers, led by team captain Tyler Legein who racked up 7 points over the weekend, won in dramatic fashion in the championship game, defeating the Humber Valley Sharks 1-0 in overtime. Round Robin: the first game saw the Rangers matched against the fast skating Amherst, New York Ice Hawks, a team that had yet to lose in tournament play all year. After spotting the Ice Hawks to an early 2-0 lead the Rangers battled back to tie the game on goals by Taylor Jenkin and Tyler Legein with assists going to Brock Pawliw and Luke Tresham. The Ice Hawks scored early in the third to take a 3-2 lead but again the Rangers tied it with an unassisted effort by Legein. The Rangers put the game away with less than three minutes remaining on a hard-earned goal by Tresham, assists going to Legein and Ryan Andrews. The second game was a tight checking match that saw the Rangers come up with a 2-1 win against the Humber Valley Sharks. Brock Pawliw notched the first Ranger goal on a set up from Brandon Taverner and Taylor Jenkin. Ryan Donnelly scored the winner on a pretty play after picking up a pass behind his back and firing it into the net. Assists went to Tresham and Legein. The Rangers played their best game of the tourna ment against the Cheektowaga Warriors winning 6-1 on an all round team effort with'good defensive play and solid goaltending by Cam Crawford. Tyler Legein scored two goals with singles going to Steve Mills, Cam Foley, Brock Pawliw and Brandon Taverner. Brian Whitney, Nick Randall, Daniel Warelis, Taylor Jenkin, Ryan Andrews, Taverner and Legein earned assists. The Rangers finished top seed in the Round Robin and advanced to the championship game. Championship Game: The Rangers were rematched with the Humber Valley Sharks in the all-Canadian final. Both teams had chances to score but couldn't capitalize in regulation time and the game headed into overtime. The game was finally decided at the three-minute mark of overtime. Stalwart cornerman, Luke Tresham, with two Hawk players pinning him against the boards, man aged to kick the puck back to Ryan Andrews in the faceoff circle. Andrews drilled a low shot over the out stretched pad of the Shark goaltender and the champi onship was clinched. Goaltender Kyle Anderson played solid in net, including some key saves late in the game and earned the shutout.
