TOWN CENTER ORTHODONTICS 243 North Service R oad, W est Suite 301, O akville Navy vet shares experiences on HMCS Oakville B y M a r y C o ll e t t SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Britannia may have once ruled the waves, but over the course of World War II, she required the worthy assis tance of some of her former colonies, particularly Canada, and notably Oakville. Oakville's honorable naval tradition endures to this day, freshly revived in the recently established Royal Canadian Sea Cadets (RCSCC) Oakville. Last W ednesday night, at the Oakville branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Church Street, the cadets were officially inspected by Able Seaman Joseph Smyth of Burlington, who served aboard the corps' name sake, the HMCS Oakville, during the wartime years of 1943-1945. Trimly attired in his navy blues, the silver-haired sailor wistfully recalled his youthful patriotism. "I signed up for naval duty when the war was on because the advertisements said it was the only way to guarantee freedom, and I wanted my family and all families to be free," said Smyth. The HMCS Oakville was a Flower Class corvette, launched in November, 1941, and distinguished for sinking a German U-boat during World War II. Since Smyth was drafted aboard the ship as a radar operator following this historical event, he did not participate in that significant battle. Though there "was not much action from U-boats after 1943", Smyth relates a tale of other difficulties encountered while serving on the HMCS Oakville. "The ship had lost its steering and after floundering about the midAtlantic for 14 days, we were running out of food. So we let go two depth charges which brought up enough fish to feed us until we could make our way back to the port in Halifax." Smyth looks back on his naval years with fondness, the only downside being long stretches of loneliness. He shipped out just 30 days after taking a new bride and did not return to her for over a year. When discharged from the navy in Cancer society fundraiser March 25th The Ninth Annual John Rizzuti Dinner Gala fundraiser is set for March 25th at the Le Dome Banquet Hall. Over the past nine years the annu al event has raised m ore than $500,000 divided betw een the Canadian Cancer Society (ticket sales) and silent auction funds, which are given to the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital 3-Centre Nursing Unit. The dinner is held in honor of Le Dome Banquet hall owner Angelo Rizzuti's father John Rizzuti and his father-in-law John Lopez. Both men passed away from cancer within a year during 1991-92 and their fami lies have organized the annual fundraiser to help the fight against cancer. The families donate all of the food and services for a five-course dinner. The gala begins at 6:15 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction. Dinner follows at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $75 per ticket. A $50 tax receipt is given for each ticket pur chased. 1946, Smyth went to work for the Dofasco Steel Company in Hamilton until his retirement 41 years later. Now, the 77-year-old veteran stays active in naval affairs and ongoing legion projects. He was co-chairman of the committee responsible for the cre ation of the Naval Memorial Monument in Burlington's Spencer Smith Park, located at Brant Street and Lakeshore Road. There, a bronze statue of an ordinary seaman sits atop a cairn upon which are inscribed the names of the 426 Royal Canadian Ships, the 73 ships of the Merchant Navy, and the 24 ships of the Royal Canadian Navy, including the HMCS Oakville. After 55 years of marriage and four children, Smyth's "war-time bride", Martha still shares in his many retire ment activities, including this one at the Oakville Legion. Smyth applauds the recent advance ments in today's Sea Cadets, especially the decision to admit females. "Women are a great asset to the navy-- anyone can see that they're equal to, or better than the males." Summing up his years of naval ser vice, Smyth says, '1 went in as a boy, and I came out a man." As for the HMCS Oakville, it was re-christened "Patria" following its sale to the Venezuelan Navy in 1945. Retired in 1962, it remains berthed in a naval shipyard in unknown condition. Linda Gignac, historian of the Navy League of Oakville, who sponsors the local Sea Cadets, is still working dili gently to recover any lost artifacts from the ship. Among other important items, the vessel's original white ensign and the bell have yet to be found. She continues to promote her cause, just in case the bell or something equal ly valuable "might be lying around in someone's basement." (905) 849-1717 HO M U K H NG ..
