Iroquois Ridge's Patrick Wang and the Hayden Huskies' Fozan Khawaja had met five times this year, with each of them claiming victories. Wang won their most recent meeting at last week's Halton championships, but didn't think that gave him an edge in the GHAC final. "He's beaten me before," said Wang, who has played at the Mississauga International Badminton Club for five years. "It comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes." Tuesday, that was Wang as he recorded a 21-13, 21-19 victory in the boys' singles final to advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament for the second straight year. A year ago, Wang and Khawaja met in the second-place match to determine the final OFSAA qualifier. "It's a unique experience. Just having played at OFSAA, I feel like I'm a better player. There (are) some great players in York Region and when you play them, it's almost like a free coaching clinic," he said. "Definitely my defence has improved and my ability on long rallies, just the persistence to not give up." While Wang said his frequent meetings with Khawaja didn't give him an edge, Iroquois Ridge coach Tim Coe said the familiarity would help because of the way the Grade 12 student prepares for matches. "He works on his game plan," he said. "He knows what he wants to do to win," he said. The two may meet again. Khawaja again found himself in the secondplace game, but this time rallied from a loss in the first game to beat Holy Trinity's Yan Li 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 for the final OFSAA spot. Like Wang, White Oaks' Jasmine Yu is returning to OFSAA -- or at least she hopes to. Yu won the girls' single title with a 21-15, 21-17 victory over St. Thomas More's Athena Montecillo. Yu went to OFSAA last year playing mixed doubles, but this year the Grade 11 student made the switch to singles. "My coach always thought I'd be a good singles player," said Yu, who plays at Advance Badminton in Burlington. She proved that theory right with her victory on Tuesday. Although it qualifies her for the OFSAA tournament in North Bay May 5-7, the first day of the tournament conflicts with her International Baccalaureate exams. "I definitely want to go. It was a really amazing experience last year," It comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes. Iroquois Ridge badminton player Patrick Wang she said. "My coaches have really helped me this year and (have) been so supportive." Holy Trinity's boys' doubles team of Joseph Hu and Derrek Chow just missed out on a trip to OFSAA. Seeded sixth, they met the No. 1 team of Dylan Thring and Bryn DeChatelain in the final. Hu and Chow took the opener 21-18 but the Georgetown duo battled back to win the next two, 21-13, 21-15, to claim the title. The Holy Trinity duo then lost a close second-place match 21-19, 2115 to a team from St. Thomas More.
