Special to The Beaver by Jamie Turner W 4 V hen The Bam I m / opens its doors this 1 /^ Saturday it plans on being more than just a store, but part o f the community. Owner/Operator Bob Gillis who has worked in the food industry for more than thirty years has worked from the ground up - or in this case buggy up - to bring The Barn to Oakville. Bob started pushing buggies and went on to manage stores. Now, as owner of The Bam, Bob is committed to applying his extensive food industry background to please the customer with quality products, exceptional customer service and fair prices. The Bam is known for its quality of produce. When founder George Love began The Bam, he made sure he kept open communication between himself and the farmers who grow his produce. The Bam still retains the services of these local farmers. Selection and freshness are key to The Barn's success. "We are the only store that has two deliveries of produce a day," says Gillis. If the produce we want isn't available in the morning, customers have another chance to get it in the afternoon. U niquely to The Barn, the store uses a three-cooler system to house their produce. Three coolers at various tem peratures ensures each variety o f produce is maintained at its correct temperature and the consumer is provided with a healthy, fresh product. The Barn is much more than just produce though. The full service meat counter provides self-serve and custom cuts. "If the customer d oesn 't see the cut o f meat he wants, w e will cut it for him ," says Bob Gillis. An excellent seafood selection, an in-store bakery, and a large deli are all high quality services available. Shoppers can a lso purchase prepared hot food s, com plete with a sitting area to enjoy them right in the store. The ch eese selection w ill be unprecedented with assorted specialty cheeses from around the world. Nothing goes on behind closed doors at The Bam. Customers can see first-hand the handling process o f fruit, meat and fish as the products are prepared and packaged right in front o f the customers. The innovative bulk food setup is something The Bam is especially proud of. The "Newleaf Bulk Bin Systems" is a state-of-the-art bulk setup that allows each bulk container to be closed tight until the customer opens it each time. This ensures freshness and hygiene for the customer's satisfaction. The sleek looking system is also very user friendly. Just pull the handle and get one nut or a bagful any quantity that suits your needs. Walking through the front door o f The Bam, customers will notice that special attention to appearance is key to their success. The atmosphere is bright, wide open aisles are available for easy mobility and the departments are clearly defined for ease of shopping. Consumers are greeted by The Barn's fresh cut flowers when they I first come into the store. "We want to create a good atmosphere for consumers to do their shopping. This is very important to us," says Bob Gillis. The Bam has always committed to "putting back" into the community."We want to be a part o f Oakville," Bob says. Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving drives are on The Barn's agenda. Breakfast programs, school, church involvement and needy children are all the responsibility of the community and therefore The Bam." The success o f The B am is clearly a result o f their m issio n ... to please the customer. Their success depends on a job w ell done and those visiting The B am Saturday w ill not be disappointed.
