W ednesday, February 16, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C3 AUTOMOTIVE Hyundai Tiburon combines style and performance By Rob Beintema SPECIAL TO T H E BEAVER W hen the Hyundai Tiburon first debuted in the fall o f '96, it not only added a breath of fresh air to the Hyundai lineup, it rocked the sports coupe market with dar ing and original styling, as well as bangfor-the-buck performance. The new 2000 Hyundai Tiburon, re styled for the first time in three years, promises more of the same in a freshened but familiar package. The Tiburon is a direct descendant of Hyundai's HCD-II concept car. And this latest version stays true to the Californiacreated spirit of the original. The sculpted sides, the aerodynamic curves, the exagger ated character lines bulging at the fenders. And other elements inspired by the HCDII. The car's low, wide stance, the frameless doors, grilleless front end, wrap-around bumpers and accented wheel housings. New for 2000, the Tiburon's cat-eye headlight assembly has been replaced by four round projector-beam headlamps. Sensuous curves over the inboard lights streak back into the hood as character lines. The front end is strengthened by a bolder lower air intake and large air dam with built-in fog lights. Front tenders have been redesigned with a more muscular look. It all sounds a little over the top on paper but, to the eye, it's a dramatic and handsome improvement. The cluster of projector lights, turn signals and fog lamps reminds me of, dare I say it, the front end of the new Mercedes Vision SLR concept supercar that debuted this year. That may seem a bit o f a leap in both price and class but it's a leap that Hyundai has made with dedication to detail and with classy and ele gant styling. The rear end has also been touched up, retaining the kitschy trademark sharkfin spoiler ('Tiburon" is Spanish for "shark") now harness the premium 2.0 L DOHC 4cylinder motor. The engine is shared with Elantra, as are'a few other items from the parts bin. The 16-valve powerplant puts out 140 horses @ 6000 rpm and 133 lb-ft of torque. Those power numbers are unchanged in this carryover engine but structural refinements and hydraulic engine mounts have helped eliminate noise and vibration. Composite material use in the cam cover, air cleaner, water pump and ignition coil has also reduced overall engine weight. A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard. The automatic is a $1000 option on all models. All Tiburons do come fairly well equipped with dual airbags, 4-wheel disc brakes, alloy wheels, power windows, remote mirrors, tinted glass, variable inter mittent wipers, 4-speaker AM/FM Cassette, quartz clock, console, tachometer and retractable dual cupholder. 2000 Hyundai Tiburon and adding larger tail lamps and air vents. All this exterior funk is topped off with a larger exhaust tip, for all the boy racers out there. There are two trim levels available for the 2000 model year - the Base (this one definitely needs a better name) and the SE version. Both feature equipment upgrades found last year on the higher-priced but now discontinued FX model. When Tiburon first debuted, it featured a two-engine power choice but all models Meineke owner's car is picture perfect By Kathryn Harriman SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER D ennis Ciaccia's 22 years of hard w ork have paid off. S ince purchasing his trea sured 1973 D odge C hallenger from a relative in 1978, Ciaccia, the ow ner o f O akville's M eineke D iscount M ufflers, has invested close to $15,000 and countless hours into the car. For over tw o decades he has p articip ated in v arious car show s including Speedsport, at the C N E , M o tio n , also in T oronto, M opar F est, the K itchener car show. B ut the crow ning achieve m ent for the O akville autom o bile technician, w as to have his prized car selected for the year 2000 edition o f the S nap-on tools "Snapshots" car calendar. A fter garnering attention at the M opar Fest in K itchener, C iaccia w as asked to subm it a picture o f his car. L ast February, he m ailed in a picture and by M ay he received a letter inform ing him that his car had m ade it to the sem i finals, w here entries w ere nar row ed dow n to 10,000 cars. It w asn't until last N ovem ber that C iaccia heard his car was to be one o f 84 classic or restored cars featured in the calendar. It's one o f six cars pictured for September. "To be chosen from out of 10,000 finalists is really a great honor," states Ciaccia. He bought the cat in 1978 from his cousin, "Ever since I was 14 I had adm ired my cousin's car and he prom ised to sell it to me when I turned 16," recalls Ciaccia. At the tim e he purchased the car, his cousin w anted $2,900 and he only had $2,000. He paid off the rest o f the $900 by giving his cousin $100 a month. W hen he bought the car it had 40,000 miles on it, and was, as he states, "like new when I bought it." It has all original panels and w as only painted once, in 1983. C iaccia is very proud o f his car, w hich is now worth $25,000 in U.S. dollars. "It's won four trophies," he states, "all for best in it's class." "I'm happy that I've kept the car for so long. I'm glad I have had it for 22 years and hopefully I'll have it for another 50 years," says Ciaccia. Ciaccia credits his success as a mechanic and businessman to the car. Ever since Ciaccia was in high school he has always been interested in muscle cars. He w ould often hang out after school at local repair shops and learned enough to fix the repairs on the Charger himself, instead of paying for costlier repairs. He enjoyed the car all through his years at Blakelock high school. "It was a fast car," he explains, "and I have the speeding tickets to prove it." O wning a car during high school forced him to have to learn how to fix it. He later becam e a licensed m echan ic, and for 10 years was at part ow ner o f an autom obile garage on Fourth Line.. He has been in business for him self for the past 11 years. "M ost o f my success started from having that car, everything took place after that." C iaccia, also the o w n er o f a Corvette and a 1956 Chevy, has never driven the Challenger in the rain or in winter but concedes to still driving the car occasionally, on w eekends during the sum m er months. Ciaccia's three boys also take an interest in the car, another reason he will never sell it. T he S napshots C lassics and Custom s Car Calendar is put out by Snap-on tools as a means o f prom ot ing the professionalism and integrity o f today's autom otive technicians. Now in it's fifth year, the calendar is highly regarded across North Am erica and com petition for classic car owners who wish to have their cars featured grows annually. Likewise, the calen dar itself is also in high dem and, in the year o f 1996-1997 nearly a million copies were needed. MOST CARS Must present coupon.
