Merriam Music hosts concert to celebrate International Jazz Day The Merriam Music School in Oakville is celebrating International Jazz Day with a concert Saturday (April 30). In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scienti c and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe, according to the organization's website. "International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication," stated a media release. "Each year, on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity; eradicating discrimination; promoting freedom of expression; fostering gender equality; and reinforcing the role of youth in enacting social change." The Saturday concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will feature musical trio Roberm. Oakville's Circle of Harmony, directed by Master Director Barbara Hodge, placed third overall at its Region 16 Sweet Adelines Competition, held in Syracuse, N.Y., on April 16. The performance chorus is the local representative chapter of the Sweet Adelines International organization. The 61 members of Circle of Harmony, as well as its four members of the Yes! Quartet wowed the crowds, according to a media release. The local chorus performs four-part harmony a cappella in the women's barbershop style.
