As parents, limited time, energy and resources often become barriers that make it harder to lead -- or even talk about -- leading a healthier lifestyle. If you can relate, head to your local YMCA on Sunday (May 1) for YMCA Healthy Kids Day. This free community event, created to show kids and families how simple daily actions can make a huge impact, is offered at YMCA's across Canada every year. Bring your whole family to learn about the importance of a lifetime of healthy, active living by engaging in fun, active play together and discovering helpful tools, activities and resources from the YMCA and local community partners. With a special emphasis on exploring healthy living habits that will make a difference throughout the year, YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a great way to take those first steps towards a healthy, active lifestyle together. YMCA Healthy Kids Day in Oakville will take place at the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA, 410 Rebecca St., from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Activities include: · Morning Wake-up Fitness Mash-up; · Twist and Shout Music and Movement with Oakville Parent Child Centre; art workshop from 4-6 p.m. Survey says... According to a 2016 YMCA Healthy Kids Survey, parents with kids from infants up to aged 18 years are most concerned about their children's mental/emotional health (50 per cent) followed by physical (28 per cent) and social health (22 per cent). Time and money are the main barriers holding Canadian parents back from leading healthy, active lifestyles with their family. And in an age where obesity and related chronic disease in our kids is steadily on the rise, this needs to change. As a local charity, the YMCA of Oakville works together with other local organizations and partners to provide solutions to help people achieve greater health. Many of these partners, such as ArtHouse, Canadian Mental Health Association, Halton Region Chapter, Oakville Parent Child Centre and the Town of Oakville, will be onsite at Healthy Kids Day to share tools and resources. A free shuttle service will be running throughout the day.
