B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, February 9, 2000 Millennium Scholars A $3,000 Canada M illennium Scholarship came as a complete sur prise to Craig Maw of Oakville, a first year law student at Queen's University in Kingston. The scholarship, given by the Canada M illennium Scholarship Foundation, is one of more than 75,000 awards - 35,000 on Ontario - totaling $215,000,000 for the 1999-2000 acad emic year. Maw is among several local stu dents to have received $3,000 Millennium Scholarships. Others include: Arthur Wang, University of W aterloo; Jenny McKnight, York University - Osgoode Hall Law School; Derek Demers, University o f W estern Ontario; Michelle Cheng, Queen's University; Heather Hare, W ilfrid Laurier University; M ichael Thompson, M cM aster University; and Sandra Albomoz, Sheridan College. The 35,416 Millennium Scholar ships represent an annual investment of $106,248,000 in Ontario. To be eligible for a Millennium Scholarship, students must be Canadian citizens, have com pleted 60% of a year of post-secondary study, be registered full time in a recognized post-secondary educational institution, and be eligible for financial assistance in their province or territory of resi dence. The Found-ation manages a $2.5billion fund and will grant scholarships until 2010. Students may receive a maximum of $15,000 over four years of study, although not necessarily for consecu tive years.
