No one was injured, but damage is estimated at approximately $150,000. | photo by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver The Oakville Fire Department believes unattended cooking was behind a blaze, which took place at a home on Fourth Line Friday (May 6) afternoon. Five fire trucks were called to a residence at 3:10 p.m., after the fire department received reports of a basement fire. Deputy Chief George Birtig said heavy smoke was seen coming from the home when firefighters arrived. Several residents had already evacuated and while some were checked for smoke inhalation at the scene; none needed to be taken to hospital. "The fire was pretty extensive in one corner of the basement and it took quite a while to get it under control due to the high heat and smoke," said Birtig. The blaze was brought under control by about 4:45 p.m. as some 20 firefighters were reported working onscene. Damage to the home has been estimated at approximately $150,000. Birtig is pointing to unattended cooking in a small basement kitchen as the cause of the fire. The Oakville Fire Department reminds residents to stay in the room at all times when they are preparing food, noting unattended cooking is the leading cause of house fires in Ontario. ©2015 Maid Right Franchising LLC.
