Halton gala gives youths `Food for Thought' at schools by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Thursday, May 12, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Ensuring youths are nourished and have the best opportunity to achieve academic success is not just a parental responsibility, said Halton Food for Thought (HFFT) board chair Melissa Adams. "It's the business of schools. It's the business government. It's the business of community. It's the business of those who can," said Adams at the Halton Food for Thought Gala May 6. "Thankfully, because you all have decided that you can... that we can, that the Halton Food for Thought family can... children in need will have access to food and will have the very best chance to succeed at school every day," she continued. Adams thanked a room of 450 community members from across Halton, who gathered at the Oakville Conference Centre in support of HFFT's work. Together, they raised $55,000 for nutrition programming in Halton schools. HFFT Executive Director Chris Burr said HFFT, which has been around for nearly two decades, has 18 new programs, new partnerships and innovative ways to "feed our kids." "And, as of this month, with Craig Kielburger Secondary School in Milton on-board, every secondary school in Halton has a student nutrition program," he said. "Currently, 60,000 kids in Halton have access to healthy foods through our programs," he continued. "We're in 110 schools, we have 110 school partners and, luckily, we have our heart The annual Halton Food for Thought fundraising gala featured Dr. Wayne Roberts, left, a Canadian food policy analyst and writer, and Katherine Bailey, a Grade 12 student at Thomas A. "This year, in Halton alone, we've given out $725,000 to all the schools in Halton to help us feed kids," Burr continued. Money from the ministry, national partners and local groups like all three United Ways across Halton, along with school partners, helped contribute $90,000. "We're here today to provide more support for these programs," said Burr, noting more sustainable funding is still needed at HFFT, which functions as poverty reduction and community health initiatives. "The work isn't done yet in Halton," he said. The HFFT Gala, in its seventh year, featured a breakfast provided by David's Tea, Fionn MacCool's, Gay Lea Food, Jack Astor's, Mohawk Raceway , Turtle Jack's, Edge Hospitality , St. Ignatius of Loyola Food School, executive chef Graham Hayes, Dr. Smoothie and Professor Punch. see Breakfast on p.13 and soul, our 1,400 volunteers, out there helping deliver these programs in schools."
