Paddlers one step closer to Rio Oakville's Adam van Koeverden and Burlington's Mark Oldershaw moved one step closer to qualifying for this summer's Rio Olympics with victories at the national team trials last week. Van Koeverden won the men's K1 (kayak singles) 1,000 metres for the second day in a row. He will now compete in the Continental Qualifiers in Gainesville, Ga. May 19-20. A win there will secure the fourth Olympic berth of the 32-year-old's career. Van Koeverden won Olympic gold in the K1 500m in 2004 in Athens and also earned a bronze medal in the K1 1,000m. He added silver medals in the 500m in Beijing in 2008 and the 1,000m in London in 2012. Oldershaw, the Olympic bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, also won on back-to-back days in the men's C1 (canoe singles) 1,000m as he bids for a third straight Olympic Games. Oldershaw can also secure an Olympic berth for Canada at the Continental Qualifiers, but the qualifying process may continue into the World Cups. The World Cup season begins May 20 in Germany. Also headed to the Continental Qualifiers is fellow Burloak Canoe Club member Paul Bryant, who teamed with Roland Varga to win the men's C2 1,000m. Canada has two Olympic spots for canoe crews or individuals. Burloak's Brady Reardon and Chris Mehak earned a second-place finish in the K2 1,000m race on the opening day of trials, finishing ahead of Burloak's Rob Clarke, who teamed up with Andrew Jessop. Clarke and Jessop moved up a spot to second place in the second K2 1,000m race. Alannah Bray-Lougheed turned in fifthplace finishes in the K1 200m and 500m. She was also eighth in the first women's K1 500m race. Jillian Perrone was sixth in the women's C1 1000m and seventh in the 500m. She took sixth and seventh in the two C1 200m races. Cory Rublee was fifth and Aaron Rublee was sixth in the men's C1 200m. Sam Pennyfather was 12th (third in the B final) of the men's C1 1,000m Also competing at trials was Oakville's KC Fraser, who paddles for Balmy Beach. She finished third in the K1 500m final and paired with Genevieve Orton to finish second and third in the K2 500m race. 49 | Thursday, May 12, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com minOr Oaks hOckey assOciatiOn jr. timbits (4 year olds, 2012 birth year in 2016/17 season) new this fall Evaluation Skates October 15-16, 2016 Season starts October 22, 2016 Gala Day March 5, 2017 Pitcher Sagl all-district academic again Oakville Trafalgar High School Sagl was named the PSAC grad Alex Sagl earned her secWest Pitcher of the Year for ond-straight Academic All-Disthe fourth consecutive seatrict Team designation. son as she moved into second The senior is a pitcher with place all-time in wins, innings the California University of pitched and strikeouts among Pennsylvania's softball team.
