continued from p.1 raccoons and no mom inside the trailer," said Ashby. All four cubs were brought to the OMHS, where one of the registered veterinary technicians checked them over to ensure they were in good health while staff looked for a licensed wildlife rehabilitator to take them in. They were eventually transferred, by a volunteer OMHS driver, to an area wildlife rescue centre where six other baby raccoons had been taken three weeks earlier. Those cubs were found in a transport truck while it was making a delivery in Milton. When all efforts were made to retrace the driver's route to locate their mom had been exhausted, staff found a spot for the cubs at a rescue centre, said Ashby. She noted OMHS has a great relationship with area rehabilitation and rescue centres and the raccoon offspring will be in good hands as they'll be cared for until they're ready to be placed back into the area where they were found or from which they originated. Ashby added the volunteer drivers have been integral to the OMHS operations, being called at the last minute to transport an animal in need. "It's amazing. You'll see community members who will go so far out of their way to help an Wildlife may need to be left alone or reunited with mom animal," she said. Still, OMHS is in need of more volunteers who can respond on short notice and drive the animals to rescue centres that are anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours away. Anyone interested is asked to call the OMHS at 905-845-1551. Ashby added if residents find an animal in distress, don't hesitate to call the OMHS Emergency Service at the same number above -- it is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. She noted the OMHS and its officers will respond and in the case of animals that appear orphaned, will try to find their moms. "The best thing you can possibly do is reunite them with their mom, that is critical," she said. "Every year, a lot of people call in and say they've found orphans and it can be anything, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're orphaned. "Usually babies will be tucked away somewhere, and then parents will go off and hunt and do their thing and they'll come back, and you probably won't see that, so there are a lot of what are called orphans, but they're not really on their own," she said. "It's important to note the difference."
