Cornish, who will be speaking at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (3001 Hospital Gate), has been involved in negotiating humanitarian access in conflict settings and the successful resolutions of hostage and crisis situations, said Judy Warrington, RCO member and one of its Speakers Series organizers. "Stephen has travelled extensively, has seen firsthand situations beyond our imagination even, and has led MSF into some significant, meaningful work in this world," said Warrington. "I think there's a lot the general public doesn't understand about both MSF and Rotary; I hope attendees will leave this event impressed by both organizations whose vital humanitarian activities embody the spirit of `Service Above Self.'" Tickets cost $50 and can be purchased online at oakvillerotaryevents.ca (Speaker Series) -- tickets are half price for students accompanied by a parent or teacher. Proceeds will support RCO's Charitable Trust, which helps fund its local community projects. There is free parking at the hospital's P6 parking garage. He joined MSF in 1996, became head of mission on country programs in Africa, South America, and the Russian Federation. Cornish has overseen humanitarian medical responses in civil war, epidemics, natural disasters and malnutrition crises. He lectures on humanitarian action and assistance challenges, and has published articles on humanitarian issues; including the well-being and rights of displaced persons in Chad, and humanitarian action and civil-military issues in Afghanistan. George Farrow, RCO president and long-time resident, said he's happy to see MSF hold a speaker event in his hometown. "Oakville has some 400 doctors in town and many world travellers live in this community," he said.
