continued from p.22 Manhattan Night, starring Adrien Brody, will be screened. Based on acclaimed author Colin Harrison's novel Manhattan Nocturne, the film tells the story of Porter Wren (Brody), a New York City tabloid writer with an appetite for scandal who is drawn into a case of sexual obsession and blackmail -- the case threatens his job, marriage and life. The screening of the modern film noir will be followed by a VIP Gala party. The Canadian and gala premiere of James Franco's Memoria is scheduled for Saturday, June 25. Set in the "troubled teen" genre and based on Franco's Palo Alto Stories and A California Childhood, the film tells the story of a young boy struggling to find his place in the world. Three directors, whose films will be featured at this year's festival, were also present at Thursday's lineup announcement to talk about their works. "It's an incredible story," said Lightbourn-Lay. "I remember when I first heard about it... my mind opened and I was thinking how is she able to do this. We were introduced through a friend and it all went from there." With the aid of guide runners, Avery was able to run the trail in its entirety. "It was an adventure," she said at Film.Ca Cinemas, "certainly something I thought I couldn't do, but that's why I did it; to send a message that disability can be overcome -- we have to move beyond the way we think and what we believe our limitations are." The documentary will have its Canadian premiere in Oakville. Maninder Chana, director and writer of Scratch, along with Michael Dragnea (producer), spoke about their feature film, which will also have its Canadian premiere at the festival. "It's the story of a young rookie security guard and she gets caught between her co-workers planning to rob their own truck and greedy gangsters desperate to grab the loot, and everything goes wrong," he said. "We're really proud of this film." Shot around Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington and other nearby areas, Chana noted those who see the film will recognize many of the backdrops. "Just looking at the list of this year's films, we're very humbled and grateful to be a part of this lineup," added Dragnea. Allan Tong is the co-director, writer and producer of the documentary The Flying Stars. The film tells the story of team captain Bornor Karbo and midfielder Census Jalloh, who are amputees who play organized soccer in Sierra Leone to cope with the horrors of war they suffered a decade ago. "This story is not only about overcoming disability, but also PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), which is something that crosses all borders...," said Tong. "This film shows how soccer is used to combat this terrible disorder." Among the international highlights are the American documentary SOMM: Into The Bottle and South African film Dis ek, Anna (It's Me, Anna). A sequel directed by Jason Wise, SOMM: Into the Bottle raises the curtain into the seldom seen world of winemaking. Dis ek, Anna tells a heart-wrenching story of familial child abuse and is based on the best-selling novel of the same name. It is directed by international Emmy award-winning South African Sara Blecher. All non-gala premiere feature films, documentaries and shorts continue June 25 and 26 at Film.Ca Cinemas.
