www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 20, 2016 | 8 Milton man's death re-enacted at Oakville property continued from p.1 It has been nearly a decade since this murder took place and Proteau said the re-enactment video, filmed at a residence on Burnhamthorpe Road West by CHCH, is intended to get people thinking about this incident again in the hope that someone may remember some crucial piece of information or have a change of heart and tell Crime Stoppers what they know. "Mr. Venerus has family in the Milton area, who deserve to know what happened to their father and grandfather," said Proteau. "Police believe there are those in the area who can still shed some light on this investigation and we are appealing to anyone with information to come forward." Proteau said a lot can happen in 10 years. During that time, the killer may have told someone what they did or someone could have found out. "Maybe there is a spouse or ex-partner or friend of the person who committed the offence, whose relationship with that person has soured and they are ready to talk about this now," said Proteau. If that is the case, Proteau said that person can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800222-TIPS (8477) and provide their information. Those who supply important information may also be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000. Proteau said the reenactment featured a Crime Stoppers volunteer playing the role of Venerus. Videographer Jason Trout captures the action as volunteer actor Fred Barrett goes through the scenario that led to the murder of Milton's Raymond Michael Venerus, who was shot and left for dead a decade ago. | photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) Raymond Michael Venerus A passing motorist spotted Venerus' body beside his Jeep Cherokee on Dublin Line outside his home around 10 a.m. that fateful day. Police haven't commented on the type, calibre, or number of weapons involved in the slaying other than to say investigators know what they are looking for. When he was killed, friends and associates told the Hamilton Spectator Venerus was "a multimillionaire, an "in-your-face" kind of guy who ran a number of businesses and owned commercial properties in Milton, including a successful towing company, garage and service station, and leased properties to others. Early in the investigation, police said investigators examined Venerus' past and did not consider it a factor. Anyone with information about this crime can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), through the website at www.haltoncrimestoppers.com or by texting `TIP201' with the message to CRIMES (274637). Residents can also contact the Halton Regional Police Service Homicide Unit at 905-8254747, ext. 8760. -- with files from Milton Canadian Champion The video shows the `victim' driving down a driveway and onto the road. At this point, a gunshot is heard and the scene then shows a body lying in the roadway next to the idling vehicle. Proteau said he wanted the reenactment shot in Oakville as opposed to the Milton neighbourhood where the murder took place because he didn't want to re-victimize that community. Look for us on Facebook Line and noted the homeowner allowed Crime Stoppers to use their property for free. The video is expected to run on CHCH at around 6:50 p.m. today (Friday, May 20). Proteau is also hoping to add the video to the Halton Crime Stoppers website www.haltoncrimestoppers.com when it is available. It's not the first time police have tried this method of cracking the cold case. Five years after Venerus was shot and left to die, police released a YouTube video in hopes of solving the cold case. Five years and hundreds of interviews later, Halton police said they know someone out there knows something and someone will tell. It's just a matter of time. Homicide Det. Alistair Watt said at the time, there's no such thing as a cold murder case. "We never give up," he said. A $20,000 reward and a Crime Stoppers reenactment video in 2009 sparked some interest from the public, but the reward expired in 2010 with no new leads.
