www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 26, 2016 | 34 Anticipation builds for 29th annual Becel Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart The anticipation and excitement is building for Oakville residents taking part in Toronto's 29th annual Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart on Sunday, June 5. Among them is resident and local event spokesperson Sheryl Gill. Fourteen years ago, Gill was in peak physical health. As a massage therapist and health coach, she has been interested in the human body and passionate about health all her life. But in 2007, at the age of 38, Sheryl's life took an unexpected shift after she set out one morning for a 10-kilometre run and suddenly collasped after running approximately 7.5 km. Her heart had suddenly stopped beating. Luckily, two bystanders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until emergency crews arrived at the scene and eventually Gill's heart was restarted with an automated external defibrillator (AED). Later, at hospital, she went through a series of tests and was told she had a congenital birth defect -- her left coronary artery was in the wrong place. "Doctors told me that by rights, I should have died as a teen or earlier," Gill said in a media release. Open-heart surgery was the only way to treat this condition, so Gill underwent an eight-hour operation. As part of her recovery, she joined a rehab group. "It was a fabulous program and provided a safe place to start exercising again," she said. Today, at 47, Sheryl still has eight wires in her chest. She's back to work, and has taken a newfound outlook on life. "Thanks to my healthy lifestyle, they were able to bring me back from the brink," she said in the release. "Now, I have even more motivation to teach simple health tools to my clients to promote an active lifestyle." The Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart, and a new run/walk presented by Aspirin, start and finish at Toronto's Exhibition Place. Those who are cycling on the 75-km route will start between 6-6:30 a.m. All other riders who are participating in the 25-km or 50-km routes can start any time after 6:30 a.m. with a latest start time of 9 a.m. Participants of the new run/walk can choose from a variety of routes along the Gardiner Expressway, including a 5-km walk or run, or 10-km run. Runners of the 10K will start their route at 10 a.m., followed by 5K runners at 10:20 a.m. and walkers will begin their route at 10:30 am. Riders and runners/walkers will never intersect on the route at any time. Any participants under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All other participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100 outside of the registration fee in order to join the event. Registration can be done online at www. rideforheart.ca until 11:59 p.m. on June 4 or the event sells out, or by phone as well at 416486-RIDE (7433). Event-day registration takes place between 5:30-9 a.m. at the Better Living Centre at Exhibition Place. The event, which takes place rain or shine, raises funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation's research and mission to prevent heart disease and stroke. This year's fundraising goal is $7 million.
