The awards celebrated police and extraordinary citizens who came to the rescue of others, as well as members of the media whose work advanced community safety or drew attention to important police work done in the community. "It is my privilege tonight to acknowledge the extraordinary measures taken by our general public, the media and our uniform and civilian members over the last year to support policing and public safety in Halton," said Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner. "Our award recipients truly embody the philosophy behind our service model of `One Vision, One Mission, One Team.' Whether you are Darlene Tucker a member of the public we serve, a uniform or civilian member of our service, a volunteer, or Chris Harper a member of the media, you have each played a key role in creating and ensuring a safe and | Oakville Beaver le photos healthy community." Civilians recognized included Milton resident David Michael Donnelly, who witnessed a motorist strike a cyclist on Tremaine Road in Milton July 3. The motorist ed the scene, but Donnelly, an Oakville mechanic, was able to get the vehicle's licence plate number. He also returned to the cyclist, called 911 and provided updates until help arrived. The cyclist, Oakville teacher and father-of- ve Chris Harper, was killed instantly in the collision. Donnelly's information was credited with leading to the arrest of Oakville's Michelle Maisey, 34, a short time later. Maisey has since pled guilty to impaired driving causing death. She was sentenced to more than ve years in prison.
