His harbinger of spring is traditionally one o f the busiest times of the year. Follow the sap buckets at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Its third annual M ap le Syrup Festival has begun and continues to March 31st. The event will be open to the public on w eekends and during March Break, M arch 13th to 17th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival includes horse-drawn wagon rides, maple candy naking demonstrations Ye Old Candy Shanty, a maple gift shop, Syrup Trail, tours of the 19th century Spruce Lane Farm house, and visits with farm ani mals. New to this year's festival is the Logging Theatre w here m ovies are shown on a 12 by 9 foot screen. And, the Pancake H ouse has m oved to the new Breckon Pavilion, w here pan cakes will be served w ith bacon, maple syrup, coffee and juice, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Horse draw n w agon rides will trans port participants between the Breckon pavilion and the syrup trail. Admission to the park is $3 per adult, $1.75 per child - m axim um cost per vehicle is $12. The park is on Burloak Drive, north of the QEW. (Weekdays, it's open to schools for educational tours by reservation only, call 827-6911 Ext. 402.) M ountsberg C onservation Area is gearing up for another great maple syrup season. This year's season runs to April 9th, weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and daily during March Break, March 13th to 17th. Mountsberg's sugar bush provides an excellent opportunity to leam about maple syrup production. The self-guided trail has interpretive signs and exhibits to explain the history of m aple syrup production from its discovery by Ontario's First N ations People to vari ous modem methods used today. The sugar bush also boasts the Sugar House where sap boils down into maple syrup in a m odem evaporator. The Candy House is alw ays a hit, with demonstrations and samples. A steaming hot stack o f pancakes and sausages with fresh maple syrup can be found at the Picnic PavilionNew this year is the Sugar Bush Express - an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh ride through the sugar bush while an interpreter talks about forest environ ments, maple syrup, and maple trees. Cost $1 per person and children four and under are free. M ountsberg W ildlife Centre is on M ilborough Line, 5 km. west of Guelph Line in Campbellville, call 854-2276. O n tario 's F irst N ations People nam ed it `sw eet w ater' and considered it one of the earth's great treasures. Many Canadians know it as maple syrup and agree that it's one of nature's sweetest gifts. C raw ford L ak e's Sweet Water Season will continue until April 9th. The park is open weekends and daily M arch 13th to 17th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. C raw ford L ake offers a unique opportunity to experience maple syrup production as it would have been done in past centuries. Gather in the recon structed Iroquoian Village and take part in a dem onstration and sample com bread dipped in fresh maple syrup. M aple candy, maple crunch and, of course, maple syrup products are avail able for sale in the new expanded giftshop.
