That was the message Stephen Cornish delivered Monday (May 16) during his presentation at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), hosted by the Rotary Club of Oakville (RCO). Cornish is the executive director for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders Canada. Founded in 1971, MSF is the world's leading independent international medical relief organization, implementing and managing medical projects in close to 70 countries, with national offices in 21 countries. With a masters in Global Risk and Crisis Management, Cornish oversees MSF Canada's national programming, fundraising, recruitment and communications while advocating on issues related to its international medical humanitarian work. "As humanitarians, we put the Band-Aid on when times are rough, but we don't have the solutions. What we can bring is empathy, what we can bring is humanity, what we can bring is a hand when one is needed most," Pictured, from left, Rae Townsend and Judy Warrington, Rotary Club members, Stephen Cornish and Dr Dominique Guguere, Doctors Without Borders at the recent Rotary Club of Oakville (RCO) public event Monday (May 16) featuring Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders Canada. | photo by Riziero Vertolli Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) said Cornish. "But you, our governments and the United Nations (UN), these are the bodies that hold the answers. Our job is to advocate on behalf of our patients." Cornish's discussion touched on three areas MSF's start, current international disasters and challenges facing individuals and the humanitarian community worldwide. This year began in a similar fashion to 2015, Cornish said, referring to the Ebola virus outbreak, then, and the Syrian crisis, now. The former was a "huge, seemingly unsolvable, transnational crisis. One that was sorely testing our resolve." "Ultimately though, fear and misinformation gave way to hope, empathy and humanitarian action. I hope this will again prevail this year," said Cornish. While many countries are facing arduous situations, Cornish said there's no crisis greater than Syria's, as its "astronomical" needs are a result of neglect and a lack of political will. "Despite the enormous challenges, despite the shifting frontlines, despite many layers of conflict, you've got conflict between the different branches of Islam," said Cornish. "On top of it all, you have a proxy war with our own governments who are fighting each other. Amidst all this is a civilian population. Millions of people have been displaced, several times. Millions more who are refugees in neighbouring countries." He noted MSF is operating six surgery see Recent on p.35 A plan that travels with you.
