Last chance to see student art show Friday There are only a few days left to catch the Halton District School Board's (HDSB) 11th annual secondary school student art exhibit. State of the Art, held at Burlington's New Street Education Centre (3250 New St.), is on display until tomorrow (Friday, May 20). An opening reception was held earlier this week on Monday (May 16). "Halton does a fantastic job with arts education, and this is evident in the quality of visual artwork at the secondary art show," said Kevin McConvey, HDSB instructional program leader for the arts. "Our students are very fortunate to have dedicated and talented teachers who help them navigate and understand the creative process. The resulting work is of very high quality, and the art show provides a unique opportunity for secondary students to share their talents with a wide and varied audience." The exhibit features hundreds of pieces of artworks from students in Grades 9-12 across the HDSB. The works include paintings, sketchings, sculptures, photography and mixed media. Parents and art lovers can drop in on the exhibit today (Thursday) until 8:30 p.m., and Friday between 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. 49 | Thursday, May 19, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Thanks to support from TD Bank Group, the Oakville Galleries recently announced it will be able to continue to offer its Art for All program to local low-income families. | photo courtesy Oakville Galleries Oakville Galleries announces renewal of Art for All program for low-income families Oakville Galleries recently announced it will be able to continue to offer its free programs to lowincome families. The Art for All program was renewed thanks to support from TD Bank Group, stated Oakville Galleries. The program provides eligible local children with free or highly-subsidized placements in Oakville Galleries' art class and camp programs, including PA Day, after-school and Saturday programs, as well as week-long March Break and summer camps. "There is no greater priority for us at Oakville Galleries than ensuring every member of our community is able to experience the many benefits of art," said Elizabeth Underhill, education officer at Oakville Galleries. "We know that childhood engagement with art is one of the greatest indicators of healthy development -- particularly in areas of problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration. With the support of TD, we are now able to ensure all children in our community have access to these benefits." Families that meet the basic criteria of the program, modeled on the subsidy standards used by municipalities across the province, are invited to register their children in up to $300 of programming per child per season. This is the second year TD has supported the initiative. "At TD, we invest in communities to make a positive impact. Our gift in support of the TD Art for All program has a focus on creating opportunities for young people," said Janice Stillo, TD Canada Trust branch manager. "In partnership with Oakville Galleries, we are working to help local children reach their full potential, right here in Oakville." In 2015, dozens of local families participated in Oakville Galleries' art class and camp programs for the first time through Art for All.
