Locally, the walk was held at the Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park where 292 participants raised $102,424. Across Canada, events raised a total of $3.2 million. The non-governmental organization run by volunteers to help improve the quality of life for people in Central America is collecting hygiene items, towels, blankets, linens, plastic storage containers, Ziploc bags, water bottles, baby and children's clothing (no winter clothing required), dental items, educational materials and children's plastic flip flop sandals. Residents interested in contributing to the large cargo container, that will include a variety of equipment from the old Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) on Reynolds Street, can drop off items at a number of locations in Milton, Burlington, Hamilton, Mississauga, Brampton and Toronto. Collection until mid-June The items will be collected until mid June so an official packing list can be created and sent to the Guatemalan government. "Please make sure all the donated items are without tags and or packing material, clean, in good repair and you make a complete list of all your items to present to the volunteer donation collector in your area," said Hilda Rossi, CCAMRE president and founder. The hospital equipment from the old OTMH legacy site will be given to the General Hospital in Zacapa, Guatemala. Other items donated will be distributed in the Merendon Mountains of Guatemala where CCAMRE has carried on its humanitarian work for 17 years.
