Wednesday, March 22, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C3 B e s t W h e e l s O a k v i l l e Trading on heritage, with power to spare Treat your windshield gently Automotive glass takes a lot of abuse. Bug impacts, road grime on the outside, evap orated solvent haze and cigarette smoke on the inside are too tough for household cleaners, resulting in streaks and smears. Use a clean, soft, 100 per cent cotton terry towel that contains no fabric-softener, silicone or dryer-sheet residue which tend to cause streaks on glass. Start with the exterior windows first, wiping in a side-to-side motion. Next, move into the interior and wipe in an up-and-down motion. This will allow you to identify where any streaks are coming from. Always fold your towel into quarters and turn frequently to ensure you have a clean surface. Traditional household glass cleaners are inef fective at removing vinyl fog (caused by solvent evaporation in vinyl, plastics and leather) and smoker's residue. Ammonia-based household glass cleaners can potentially harm tinted windows. Look for glass cleaners that are non ammonia-based, streak-free and safe for tinted windows. 0 H O N D A SPECIAL E D ITIO N S O F O U R C IVIC SEDAMSPMU B H M $ 1 6,900m srpDual mHxigs · AM/FM Stereo with 4 Speaker! · Radt-and-Pinion Steering · 14* Wheels with Full Covers · 1.6 Litre, 106-hp, SOHC Engine · 4-Wheel Double-Wishbone Suspension · Remote Fuel & Trunk Releases * 5-Speed Manual Transmission · Child-Proof Rear Door Locks · Body Side Mouldings · 60 /4 0 Split Fold-Down Rear Seatback · i Mote... B E S T S E L L By Malcolm Gunn SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER s anyone who has been checking out the car scene knows, retro is all the rage, and nowhere is this trend more evident than at Volkswagen. The head-turning New Beetle is usually the model that springs to mind when thoughts turn to cars that remind us of our past. But VW is once again attempt ing to grab a piece of the mini van market with its cavernous EuroVan, a vehicle with lineage that can be traced back to the Microbus/Transporter era of the mid-'1950s. Launched in 1999, the EuroVan is actually Volkswagen's second shot at marketing an updated bus. An attempt in the mid-1990s failed to ignite public interest or generate much in the way of sales. Other than produc ing a few camperized versions, VW went into lull retreat. At first blush, the EuroVan problem has not been related to quality, but to horsepower. When the Westphalia, as it was called, was in vogue 25-30 years ago, its lack of power was running joke among owners. And if you were stuck behind one these vans while A driving uphill, you could expect to eat your fair share of blue smoke while poking along at something much less than the speed limit. Succeeding models such as the water-cooled Vanagon tried to rec tify this deficiency, but by then Chrysler had kick-started the minivan phenomenon, complete with modem styling, front-wheeldrive powertrains, and plenty of standard features -- all at a rea sonable price. The hefty early-'90s EuroVan had just a 110-horsepower fivecylinder gas engine, with a 77horsepower diesel version avail able as a limited option. Once again, there was little power for people who were accustomed to reasonable acceleration and pass ing ability. Volkswagen has not forgotten the errors of its ways. Standard EuroVan propulsion is now provided by VW's famed VR6, a 2.8-litre DOHC V6 powerplant that also sees service in almost every other Volkswagen model. Mounted transversely inside the EuroVan's engine bay, the VR6 produces 140 horsepow er and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. A fourspeed automatic transmission completes the front-drive system. This new EuroVan is available in two basic models: GLS; and MV. The seven-passenger GLS arrives well equipped with fea tures such as automatic climate control with pollen/anti-dust ven tilation system, power windows, power outside minors and door locks, cruise control, six-speaker AM/FM/cassette sound system and a heated windshield washer system. The MV comes with two rearfacing mid-row seats with a table that folds out from the side panel, additional interior lighting and snap-on side window curtains. The MV can also be equipped with an optional Weekender pack age that includes a pop-up roof, double bed conversion, window screens, refrigerator and a second battery. You can also order the full-on Eurovan Camper edition of the EuroVan built by Winnebago that includes, among other items, swiveling front seats and a twoburner gas stove in addition to the Weekender package. Whatever the choice, the EuroVan's pumped-up power, unique features and multi-use functionality should help this minivan return to its cult status position among the Volkswagen faithful.
