Local actions honour Orlando shooting victims by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 13 | Thursday, June 16, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville Town Council held a moment of silence Monday evening to honour the victims of the mass shooting, which took place in Orlando, Fla., early Sunday (June 12) morning. The solemn event took place at the foot of a Pride flag, raised at Oakville's Town Hall and then lowered to half-mast, to affirm the Town of Oakville's support for diversity, respect and inclusivity in the wake of the tragic events in Orlando. The Town of Oakville, Province of Ontario, and Canadian flags at the site were also lowered to half-mast. Forty-nine people were killed when a gunman stormed an Orlando, Fla. nightclub, which predominantly catered to members of the LGBT community. The gunman himself was killed in a shootout with police. Before the moment of silence, which was observed by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and numerous councillors, Burton issued a statement calling on residents to focus on the right things in the wake of this tragedy. "This is Pride Month, when we celebrate part of the diversity of our community. Let's acknowledge the years of struggle it took to get to where we are today," said Burton. Following the moment of silence, Burton thanked everyone in the community who works for a more accepting and diverse place to live and love. Meanwhile, some Oakville residents are organizing a candlelight vigil to honour the Orlando shooting victims today (Thursday) at Towne Square, 98 George St. It begins at 8 p.m. with two minutes of silence and will feature Theatre Sheridan students performing a tribute. "As a community, we hope that we can come together, say a prayer, and stand in solidarity to show that love always wins," it states on the Oakville Candlelight Vigil for the victims of the attack in Orlando Facebook event page.
