Celebration of Unity at Al Falah Islamic Centre June 19 Residents in Oakville, Milton and Mississauga are invited to attend a special interfaith event Sunday (June 19) to mark Canada's commitment to resettling Syrian refugees. The Celebration of Unity is hosted by Human Concern International (HCI) and Canadians in Support of Refugees in Dire Need (CSRDN). "The Celebration of Unity is a way to bring people together who have done so much to help Canadians open their doors to Syrian families," said Dr. Aliya Khan, CSRDN chair. "We want to bring our communities together to mark our accomplishments in resettling Syrian refugees and to highlight and recognize the important work that still remains to be done." The appreciation and fundraising event will include a free communal Iftar (breaking of the daily Ramadan fast) and be held at the Al Falah Islamic Centre, 391 Burnhamthorpe Rd. E., in Oakville. The appreciation night, which is open to the public, starts at 7 p.m. and is followed by the communal dinner form 9-10 p.m. CSRDN has been an organization that has helped sponsor the resettlement of eight Syrian refugee families, while HCI has provided humanitarian and security assistance to those arriving in Canada. The latter has committed more than $6 million in assisting Syrians abroad and sponsoring families who have resettled in Canada, according to a media release. The two groups hope to raise between $50,000-$100,000 during the June 19 event to continue efforts towards addressing the Syrian crisis. "Canadians have been incredibly generous and welcoming to Syrian refugees," said Mohamed Noorani, of HCI. "We want to bring people of different faiths together who have been working on the refugee crisis to mark what has been accomplished and to look at the tasks that still lie ahead."
