Sunday, April 23, 2000 Oakville Beaver Weekend Tn eQ um uB u m 3 Only one trustee opposed plan (Continued from page 1) Voted Oakville's Best Dance Studio 200 onlookers, the board approved two crucial rec om m endations supporting consultant C N W atson's strategic capital plan. By 9-1 margins, trustees okayed the 20-year plan in principle and implementa tion o f its first five years. The breakthrough votes came a year after previous accom m odation proposals lost on 5-5 deadlocks. David Bird said the plan will be needed to cope with huge enrolment increases. "It's like a car careening down a hill. I'd rather be in the car steering it than stand ing in front of it," said the Burlington trustee. "It's not the best plan, but it is a plan and we can amend it." The consultant's report was released in February and recom m ends building 41 schools, but closing 15 others to attract provincial grants. Oakville trustee Debbie Marklew said some school closures are inevitable, but the board will continue seeking community input. "There are program , safety and boundary issues and these will be addressed as we fine-tune the propos al," said the O akville trustee. "But there are more than 1,300 students in my Ward 5 who have no place to go. Now I think there's light at the end of the tunnel. We're finally going to get a school after 12 years." Burlington trustee Sheila Flook opposed the plan, cit ing tight decision timelines, a shortage of information and several other flaws. "As a trustee, I have to make decisions at this table that will allow me to go home at night and sleep. I feel as if I say yes to the C.N. Watson report, I will have many sleepless nights ahead of me," she said as spectators cheered loudly. Flook said plan recom mendations for new schools and closures are inadequate and also criticized the report for recom m ending junior kindergarten based on eco nomic reasons. "I see a plan that is all about bricks and mortar. There is nothing in the plan about w hat's best for stu dents," she said. "How can I say yes to a plan, if I don't have the full picture on what the plan could mean for stu dents in Halton?" The community is also continuing to react strongly to plan recommendations. W ednesday's spectators included a busload of Acton residents opposing a propos al to sell 1.2 hectares of M cK enzie-Sm ith Bennett School lands. More than 2,800 o f the tow n's 7,600 resident have signed a petition against the recommendation. "This has been a park for the east end of town. Children have played there for decades," said delegate Rick Bonnette. "To sell land after the taxpayers' invest- ment would be immoral." A Mountain Gardens elementary school delegate warned closing that Burlington school would lead to over crowding and listed several alterna tives. "This area has bought and paid for a school many times over," said Vicki Daly. "Don't make us into another Georgetown." She said Mountain Gardens' enrol ment had been kept low because it had housed special needs programs. "We felt we were doing a good deed, but we feel betrayed now," said Daly. But a representative of a Milton ele mentary school named for closure sup ported the plan. "I'm asking the board to pass the CN Watson report to avoid a possible accommodation crisis in Halton," said Paul Tate of Martin Street P.S.. "Vote `yes' to make it right, but come back to us for the necessary amendments." A formal committee was previously established to consider closing one of Aldershot's elementary schools, with a decision slated for June 21. Fairfield and Maplehurst have been mentioned as candidates for closure. The June closure vote is being con sidered to attract loans to build a new elem entary school by September, 2001. The C.N. Watson plan is recom mending school closures to eliminate a board surplus o f more than 4,000 spaces and trigger provincial new school grants.
