Local LHIN recognized for respite program The Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) was recently recognized for its Caregiver Respite Program. The local LHIN received the 3M Health Care Quality Team Award in the category of Quality Improvement Initiative Across a Health System. The national awards ceremony was held in Ottawa earlier this month and recognizes innovation in health services. The Caregiver Respite Program, developed through several partnering organizations, provides five services: emergency respite; out-ofhome respite (short stay); adult day respite (day, evening and bathing service); in-home respite and caregiver counseling; and knowledge exchange and support. Caregivers can access all five services. In-home respite hours are based on assessed need and can be used by the caregiver as he or she chooses. The program has a centralized intake and once patients are admitted, respite advisers counsel and educate on the services available to the caregiver and coordinate entry into one or more services. Through the Mississauga Halton LHIN Regional Learning Centre, educators provide in-class or in-home education to caregivers in areas such as positioning, turning, feeding and changing dressings to enable caregivers to feel supported in their care. Educators also train and educate respite provider staff in a variety of caring skills for those with dementia, Alzheimer's and difficult behaviors, to name a few conditions.
