Smich and Millard guilty of first-degree murder by Molly Hayes Hamilton Spectator 3 | Thursday, June 23, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Convicted killer Dellen Millard turned and glared at Tim Bosma's family Friday , shortly after he and his friend Mark Smich of Oakville were found guilty of first-degree murder Friday (June 17). The courtroom erupted in cheers and cries as the jury foreperson read out the verdicts, culminating an exhaustive five-month trial and more than three years after the 32-year-old Ancaster dad was senselessly murdered for his pickup truck. "For three years, we have been in and out of this courthouse, forced to look at and breathe in the same space with the utter depths of depravity in our society," Sharlene Bosma, Tim's widow, said in a speech outside the courthouse afterward. "We have had to endure being near the two men that walked down my driveway... and took away the bright light in our lives that was Tim. "For Tim's murderers, their life sentence begins now. Ours began over three years ago -- when they murdered Tim." It took five days for the 12-person jury to reach their decisions. Millard faces two other first-degree murder charges, one in the death of his father, Wayne, and a second for the death of former girlfriend Laura Babcock. Smich also faces a first-degree murder charge for Babcock's death. Bosma left his Trinity Road house -- and Sharlene and their two-year-old daughter -- on May 6, 2013, to take Millard and Smich on a test drive of the pickup truck he was selling online. He was shot in the passenger seat by the two strangers, who then incinerated his body in an animal cremator at Millard's air hangar at the Region of Waterloo airport. Millard, now 30, from Toronto, and Smich, now 28, from Oakville, were both charged with first-degree murder in May 2013. Justice Andrew Goodman had harsh words for the murderers, who have both been sentenced to a mandatory life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. "(Their) despicable and callous actions have not taken away Tim Bosma's memory and spirit, as demonstrated by the Bosma family's presence in this courtroom throughout these proceedings, Mark Smich Dellen Millard Surrounded by family and friends afterwards, Sharlene thanked the jury for their dedication over this long trial -- and said despite all that has happened in the past three years, she feels "blessed." "I was fortunate enough to have spent four and a half years with a wonderful man who, for three of those years, I got to call my husband. He chose me," she said. In addition to life in prison for the two killers, the Crown also requested a DNA order and a nocontact order. Both Millard and Smich declined to say I'm always going to mourn what we're never going to have, and what we're never going to be able to share together. But I will celebrate what we were able to have because every one of those moments count. While Tim may have been stolen, that time never will be. Over the last three years, we'd only begun to learn to rebuild, to learn to move forward, carrying Tim with us. But now, the real work begins. Because our story does not end here. Tim Bosma's widow anything before they were sentenced. But Smich's lawyer said afterwards he plans to appeal the conviction, and believes he has "strong" grounds to do so. Millard's lawyers offered no comment. Outside, assistant Crown attorneys Tony Leitch, Craig Fraser and Brett Moodie spoke outside the courthouse afterwards, expressing their gratitude to the jury for their dedication on this case. "I want to profoundly thank the jury. They've worked very hard and they've done justice for Tim," Leitch said. "Justice has been done in our community." Sharlene Bosma also thanked the jury: "I cannot imagine how stressful and difficult that this has been on them... we have prayed for them every day and will continue to do so as they re-enter their lives." And for now, that is her plan as well. "I'm always going to mourn what we're never going to have, and what we're never going to be able to share together. But I will celebrate what we were able to have because every one of those moments count," she said. "While Tim may have been stolen, that time never will be," she said. "Over the last three years, we'd only begun to learn to rebuild, to learn to move forward, carrying Tim with us. "But now, the real work begins. Because our story does not end here." The hallway erupted in cheers as soon as Sharlene Bosma and her family -- known around the courthouse as the "Bosma Army" -- were escorted out of the courtroom. Sharlene was simultaneously laughing and crying as she gave hugs to the assistant Crown attorneys, police officers, and even reporters in the hallway. The family invited the media to participate in a prayer circle led by their pastor.
