Halton Region launches its updated Air Quality Index Halton Region announced Tuesday (June 21) the launch of its updated Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) to make it easier for residents to protect themselves from air pollution. The tool measures air quality and is intended to help residents make informed decisions about whether they should engage in outdoor activities, particularly in the hot summer months when poor air quality is at its peak. "The Air Quality Health Index is another tool that makes it easier for residents to understand air quality levels and the impact poor air quality can have on a person's health. By providing this information in an easy-to-understand format, we are helping people make informed choices to protect their health from air pollution at every age and stage of life," said Halton Region Chair Gary Carr. The AQHI is a scale designed by health and environmental professionals. Air quality is monitored through the Region's air monitoring stations and the day is ranked along with the degree of risk with four colours, blue, orange, red and maroon: · A blue air day (1-3 on the AQHI scale) means low risk. Air quality is ideal for enjoying outdoor activities; · An orange air day (4-6 on the AQHI scale) means moderate risk. People with heart or breathing issues may want to consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities if they are experiencing symptoms; · A red air day (7-10 on the AQHI scale) means high risk. People with heart or breathing issues, as well as children and older adults, should reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities. Others should also consider similar action, especially if experiencing coughing or throat irritation; · A maroon air day (+10 on the AQHI scale) means air pollution is extremely high. This extremely low level of air quality would be reached during an event like a large, prolonged fire. People, especially children and the elderly, should avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
