www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 24, 2016 | 16 Pension reform affects Halton MPP's new post by Melanie Hennessey Metroland West Media Premier Kathleen Wynne says Halton MPP Indira Naidoo Harris's role as an associate minister overseeing the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) will no longer be needed now that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is being enhanced. In light of the pension overhaul at the national level, the Province has decided to call off its plans to roll out an ORPP . Speaking with the media at Queen's Park Tuesday (June 21), Wynne said, "There will obviously be staff positions and jobs that are not necessary" at the provincial level due to the change. "Will that position, the minister responsible for the ORPP , be necessary? No," said Wynne. "The minister responsible for the ORPP will be part of the scaling down of the organization. Indira Naidoo-Harris is an important voice. I want her voice at the table." The Province has long been calling for change to the CPP , but Ontario's Premier said the previous federal government "refused to OAKVILLE ct your t! e t o r en P Investm call 25 YEARS IN OAKVILLE ® with the optimum in vehicle rust control and much more! Complete Cars from $ Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris act." Plans then began at Queen's Park to create an ORPP to help supplement the incomes of retiring Ontarians. "When the new federal government was elected, the possibility to enhance the CPP emerged," she said. "Our preference has always been a national solution." Naidoo-Harris was named as the Associate Minister of Finance (Ontario Retirement Pension Plan) last week during Wynne's cabinet shuffle. In a statement sent to the Oakville Beaver, Naidoo-Harris applauded the CPP enhancements. "This is great news for the people of Ontario and I'm proud our government was a key part of this historic agreement," she said. "I look forward to being a strong voice for the people of Halton and Ontarians as a member of Premier Wynne's Cabinet, through the transition to the CPP and into the future. "In the coming days and weeks, I'll be working closely with (Ontario Finance) Minister (Charles) Sousa on next steps regarding CPP enhancement and how that fits into work we have put into the ORPP ," said Naidoo-Harris. "We are putting in place the tools necessary to ensure a secure retirement for Ontario workers and a stronger future for our province. "Yesterday's historic agreement does just that, as it will help ensure that current and future generations can retire with dignity and security," she said.
