There's something for everyone and every taste at Ribfest continued from p.1 "Everywhere I go there's lots of competition. There's great competition. Some of the best ribbers in North America are here at the Oakville Ribfest, which is why I pride myself on winning three years in a row," he said. "The reason people should choose Kentucky Smokehouse is because we slow hickory smoke our ribs for about five hours, then we bake them for another hour, baste them in our barbecue sauce, finish them off on the barbecue, add another layer of sauce. So by the time the food hits your plate it's been smoked, it's been baked, it's been caramelized in three or four layers of sauce. There are just so many layers of love and tenderness that have gone into preparing that rack of ribs that you just can't find anywhere else." Anastasiadis said his team does about 30 ribfests per summer in Canada and then heads back to the southern U.S.A. where the ribfest tour continues until November. "There is nothing I love more than coming to a different place every weekend, seeing new faces and then seeing them again the following year," he said. "Them coming up to you and saying, `Thanks for an amazing barbecue.' It's really an amazing feeling." This year's event will also see ribber Kona Sakellis of Route 55 Barbecue participating in her second Oakville Ribfest. The Canadian-owned business features traditional southern barbecue found along Route 55 K a r a s t a n A r e a R u g s 19 | Friday, June 24, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com in New Orleans, St. Louis, and Memphis. "We are proudly Canadian, but we've done extensive homework and spent a lot of time researching and fusing a lot of flavours together," said Sakellis. "Some of our features include Memphis-style ribs where you add a rub before you smoke them, grilling styles from St. Louis, our New Orleans spicy Cajun beans and so forth." Sakellis said Ribfest-goers should visit her business because in addition to its ribs, it has a wide variety of dishes including beef brisket, barbecue chicken (made with a secret recipe), pulled pork, mac-and-cheese and more. "Our menu caters to a variety of folks," said Sakellis. "Young or old. It doesn't matter what age you're at." Sakellis said Route 55 Barbecue has won numerous awards for its sauce and ribs and is the defending champ in numerous municipalities this year. She is hoping to add the Oakville Ribfest trophy to her collection. Friday night's lineup on the main stage from 4-11 p.m. includes Rocket 88, The Argues and Acrobat (a U2 tribute band). Performing live Saturday night are High Rendition Jazz Band, Beat Heathens, Buddy Love Band, Sheridan Musical Theatre, Bare Blue Sea and to close out the night, Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen experience. Sunday's lineup include Palomino Black, Groove Hammer, Circle 5 and The Caverners (Beatles tribute). · M i r a g e H a r d w o o d Event chair Trish Peden said there's something for everyone to do -- and eat -- at Ribfest. Throughout the weekend there will be visits from Spidey, Disney characters Jasmine, Elsa and Cinderella and of course, the Ribfest mascot, Oakey. "There's also a free Kids' PlayZone, a large amusement midway with rides and games, artists, a community marketplace, many other food vendors, plus various tall-boy cans of beer and a selection of wines from Chile to enjoy with your ribs," said Peden, a 27-year Rotary Club member. New to the fun is a misting station in anticipation of the warm weather and a charging station that will allow attendees to keep their mobile devices fully-charged so they can vote electronically for the best ribs and the best sauce, said Peden. There will be contest draws for those using Twitter and Facebook to share their Ribfest experience. Honda Indy Toronto will also have an Indy showcar on display both Friday and Saturday, with volunteers on-hand to talk about the Toronto Indy race. As in years past, the event will be `green' with all recyclables and organics being collected for responsible processing. Ribfest previously won an award from the Recycling Council of Ontario for waste minimization. It was also voted the number one local tourist attraction in the Oakville Beaver's 2015 Reader's Selection Awards. Funds raised support the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar's work to help those in need, both locally and internationally. Ribfest is free, however parking at Sheridan College will cost $10. Those who park their cars on campus will receive a coupon booklet worth up to $800. Free parking is available at Town Hall at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. where a shuttle will pick up attendees and drop them off at ribfest. "The Sheridan College site is both wheelchair- and stroller-friendly," noted Peden. "We'll have people movers to bring guests from parking lots directly to the gate." Pets aren't allowed at the event, however Barks n' Rec will provide dog daycare service near the main gate to take care of dogs while owners can go in and enjoy the event.
