Three quick goals gets Blue Devils three points Felipe Vilela's three quick goals earned the Oakville Blue Devils as many points in the League1 Ontario soccer standings last Sunday. The defending league champs trailed Masters FA Saints 1-0 in a cross-division clash at L'Amereaux when Vilela went to work with a 12-minute hat trick (at the 66, 68 and 78-minute marks). Allando Matheson put the Saints up 1-0 with a goal 39 minutes in, but the hosts were left without their starting goalie Filip Ljubevski, red-carded after Vilela's first goal. Vilela -- the 2015 Golden Boot winner -- now has seven goals this season, two behind current leader Leaford Allen of Sigma. "We missed a lot of chances in the first half, and when you don't score you get scored on," Vilela said. "In the second half we came out the Oakville Blue Devil way and got the goals." The two teams traded scoring chances in the first 30 minutes, but it would be Matheson opening the scoring on a quick through ball behind that left Matheson with an opening at near post. He slammed the ball under Oakville goalkeeper Karman Saini. Matheson later had to exit the match with an injury and play began to turn in favour of Oakville. A penalty call led to Vilela's first goal and the dismissal of the Masters goalie. Vilela quickly tested his replacement, Danny Grant, finding space behind the keeper to chip him for his second score. Vilela then latched on to a ball in from the right flank with about 10 minutes remaining, redirecting his third of the night. "It's nice to see Felipe get on the scoresheet because I think he's been playing great this season -- probably better than last season -- but he just hasn't been getting the goals," said Oakville head coach Duncan Wilde. "Hopefully that's a nice stepping stone for him." The win puts the Blue Devils in fourth place with 11 points, two behind Windsor but with a game in hand. "We needed some good fortune and the penalty got us back in," Wilde said. "I don't think we looked back from there." Oakville's next game features North Toronto Nitros Sunday, June 26 at 3 p.m. at Sheridan College Stadium. YOU $ 208,000 for the SickKids Foundation! NOOOBODY! Buzz's depth key to victories continued from p. 28 With starting goalie Bailey Brown ejected, Matt Hodowany came in and limited Halton Hills to five goals over the final two periods. The Buzz also managed to win the game without the likes of Foster Cuomo and Kyle Kolwich, who combined for 31 goals in 20 games this season. Marley Angus, one of four Jr. C call-ups in the lineup, chipped in with a pair of goals. "We're a deep team," Smith said. "We've had seven or eight guys missing some games, but all the Jr. C guys are ready to play." "I like to think we haven't played our best lacrosse yet," said Burton. "We still haven't put our best lineup on the floor." Notes: Oakville finished the regular season 15-5. Four of those losses were by a single goal....This season marked the fifth time in the team's 16-year history that it won 15 games in a season....Renaud's first goal on Saturday was the 170th of his career, moving him past Brenden Thenhaus for first on the team's all-time list.
