The Central West Region tournament was held May 6 at the Milton courthouse with Cawthra Park S.S. of Mississauga being crowned champion. St. Thomas Aquinas finished second and Mayfield S.S. of Caledon third. Other Grade 12 high school students competing at the regionals came from Corpus Christi S.S. of Burlington, St. Joan of Arc S.S. of Mississauga and Centennial S.S. of Guelph. The eight-team Halton championship, a qualifier for the regionals, was held two days earlier. Corpus Christi won with Aquinas second, Holy Trinity of Oakville third and Robert Bateman of Burlington fourth. Christi and Aquinas moved on to the Central West regionals. At the Halton tourney individual awards went to: · Best Student Lawyer: Katie DiMauro, Corpus Christi S.S.; · Best Student Witness: Alexsandra Doyle, Holy Trinity S.S.; · Most Collegial: Olah Mobarak, White Oaks S.S. At both competitions students either represented the Crown or the defence team and had to prosecute or defend a common case. Lawyers acted as judges. The mock trials are sponsored by the Ontario Bar Association and the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN). High School students participated in the Halton High School Mock Trial Championship tournament on Wednesday at the Milton Court House. The tournament included students from White Oaks, Nelson, Abbey Park, Robert Bateman, St. Thomas Aquinas, Loyola, Corpus Christi and Holy Trinity secondary schools.
