www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 1, 2016 | 14 Residents producing less garbage: Halton Region report by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Halton residents are producing less garbage, according to a Halton Region report. The per capita garbage rate declined from 157 kilograms/year in 2014 to 151 kg/year in 2015, even though the population grew by 2.4 per cent. Landfill lifespan may be extended If current trends continue, Halton's landfill lifespan will be extended to between 2042 and 2046, states the report that was discussed at Halton Regional Council's planning and public works committee meeting June 15. Overall, Halton Region is diverting about 59 per cent of its waste material from its landfill. The Blue Box and Green Cart programs remain consistent, with 94 per cent of households placing recyclable material out for weekly collection and 65 per cent of households participating in the curbside Green Cart program, the report reveals. However, staff admitted participation in the Green Cart program has "slightly decreased" from when it began collection a few years ago, even though the amount of organic waste has been maintained. Education and awareness on the horizon Waste Management and Road Operations Director Rob Rivers told committee members staff is looking at implementing an education and awareness program to engage residents in the importance of participating in the waste diversion program. The report also highlights how yard waste tonnes dropped in 2015 by about 23 per cent when compared to 2014. "The main reason for the decline was the absence of storm brush material that was a factor in 2014 following the December 2013 ice-storm," the report states. "The drier fall season also contributed to the decrease in tonnes." For more on the report, visit halton.ca.
